Joshua Judson Rosen (rozzin)'s status on Wednesday, 26-Feb-2020 13:25:09 EST Joshua Judson Rosen Ever since my #upgrade to #Debian 10 / #buster, I've had problems with #Epiphany crashing and my home filesystem getting intermittently (and seemingly randomly) low on space. I think I just solved both problems by disabling the #Google Safe Browsing feature, "Try to block dangerous websites":

Joshua Judson Rosen (rozzin)'s status on Friday, 06-Jan-2017 15:49:28 EST Joshua Judson Rosen Every time a #GMail user is unable to receive my #email because #Google inexplicably ate it, and someone suggests I should give up on !selfhost'ing and just let Google manage *my* mail too, I can only think "are you insane!? Then *I* wouldn't be able to receive e-mail either! Why would I want that!?". -
Joshua Judson Rosen (rozzin)'s status on Friday, 09-Sep-2016 17:00:15 EDT Joshua Judson Rosen If you really need to #IM with people via #Google, here's a nice #XMPP gateway for your side: https://github.com/ZeWaren/jabber-hangouts-transport -
Joshua Judson Rosen (rozzin)'s status on Thursday, 08-Sep-2016 16:59:25 EDT Joshua Judson Rosen So, #GoogleTalk still works and is still #federated #XMPP, but is an #island WRT other #Google services: there are no lines of direct communication with the Google mainland, despite being able to still see the lights on in the distance sometimes. -
Joshua Judson Rosen (rozzin)'s status on Thursday, 08-Sep-2016 16:56:50 EDT Joshua Judson Rosen #Google's migration of #GMail users from the #GoogleTalk backend to Hangouts would have actually been pretty good for an internal corporate rollout where 100% migration was achieved with intense handholding. But for something this public, they should have at least sent stragglers an e-mail with specific hard cut-over dates—instead of assuming that if you weren't present for the parade then you didn't matter. -
Joshua Judson Rosen (rozzin)'s status on Thursday, 08-Sep-2016 16:49:41 EDT Joshua Judson Rosen For a while #GoogleTalk was still available via #Google's webUIs, but then they switched the back end on those to Hangouts for everyone and removed the option for which back-end was in use. And for a while they displayed prominent notices about what was going on, but then eventually they stopped doing that. So if you went some period of time without using #GMail for example, you might have missed all of the banners. -
Joshua Judson Rosen (rozzin)'s status on Thursday, 08-Sep-2016 13:12:40 EDT Joshua Judson Rosen #Google didn't so much shut down their !XMPP federation support as just stop maintaining it (which one could argue is actually worse); there's some info in "No, it's not the end of XMPP for Google Talk": http://xmpp.org/2015/03/no-its-not-the-end-of-xmpp-for-google-talk/ -
Joshua Judson Rosen (rozzin)'s status on Saturday, 23-Jul-2016 22:22:33 EDT Joshua Judson Rosen Ugh: apparently it's no longer possible to deliver #email to #Google Mail users without having an #SPF record on my domain? -
Joshua Judson Rosen (rozzin)'s status on Wednesday, 30-Mar-2016 13:54:46 EDT Joshua Judson Rosen Finally found out exactly what #Google thinks #2FA means. #Threat-model seems to rank "I'm kidnapped and my password beaten out of me" above "someone stole my laptop" and "I lost my phone". Really? #WTF? -

Joshua Judson Rosen (rozzin)'s status on Monday, 24-Feb-2014 13:39:15 EST Joshua Judson Rosen Color-inverted "#", that is. #Google uses it for (some of?) their menu-buttons these days, as does #GNOME 3's gnome-control-center. -
Joshua Judson Rosen (rozzin)'s status on Wednesday, 12-Feb-2014 08:17:09 EST Joshua Judson Rosen Where's the #bug tracker for #GMail, anyway? Is there any way for end users to actually get a bug-report to a #Google developer? -
