@bobjonkman, at this point #GoogleTalk is (just) a pretty shitty #XMPP server: it's missing a whole bunch of important XEPs like Carbons and fully-functional MUCs, and it doesn't do back-end #TLS so most (better) servers will refuse to talk to it.

So, #GoogleTalk still works and is still #federated #XMPP, but is an #island WRT other #Google services: there are no lines of direct communication with the Google mainland, despite being able to still see the lights on in the distance sometimes.

#Google's migration of #GMail users from the #GoogleTalk backend to Hangouts would have actually been pretty good for an internal corporate rollout where 100% migration was achieved with intense handholding. But for something this public, they should have at least sent stragglers an e-mail with specific hard cut-over dates—instead of assuming that if you weren't present for the parade then you didn't matter.

For a while #GoogleTalk was still available via #Google's webUIs, but then they switched the back end on those to Hangouts for everyone and removed the option for which back-end was in use. And for a while they displayed prominent notices about what was going on, but then eventually they stopped doing that. So if you went some period of time without using #GMail for example, you might have missed all of the banners.

Interesting to see how a distributed service like !XMPP / #jabber is almost down just because #googletalk is down.
