#OMGA. It looks like a Blue Peter competition entry, and not a winning one. Perhaps it's all an anti-forgery strategy. No self-respecting forger would want to create something so hideous. https://www.rba.gov.au/media-releases/2019/mr-19-02.html #AU -

In 1945, "Nugget" Coombes prepared a White Paper of Full Employment for the #AU gov. (Britain had a similar document): "In the worst period of the depression well over 25 per cent were left in unproductive idleness. By contrast, during the war no financial or other obstacles have been allowed to prevent the need for extra production being satisfied to the limit of our resourc… -

@tregeagle @Smithums 'I was a pilot in the Royal Air Force in the war, and we were discussing on a troop ship coming home once how we would deal with the problems of unemployment. And one lad got up, and he said something I’ve never forgotten. He said, “In the 1930s we had mass unemployment, but we don’t have unemployment when we’re killing Germans.” He said, “If … -

@tregeagle Nor would I be. It's lunchtime and my eyelids are drooping already. When will I learn that I'm in no condition to go running around burning the candle at one end? -

When I was in my mid-teens, my mother took me to see Peter Ustinov doing his cosmopolitan raconteur turn at the State Theatre in Sydney. We both pretended to get the highbrow cultural references and (as did most of the audience, I expect) dutifully laughed at them when required to do so. With hindsight I realise we both just wanted to be that breezily sophisticated sort of pe… -

I learn via the splendid biog that @tregeagle lent me (Simpson 2003) that Douglas Adams and John Lloyd wrote two episodes of a kids' animated series called Doctor Snuggles. The name rang a bell, and YouTube duly delivered a Proustian rush of better-than-Cosgrove-Hall animation, combined with Peter Ustinov phoning it in like the pro he was. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BT38rbo5Eg -

I have tired eyes. So when I read George #Monbiot talking about his "thirty years of campaigning", I first read it as "thirty years of complaining". As long as it's for a good cause, I guess. -

I walk to and from work, but I still don't have enough time for podcasts. I've been neglecting Melvyn Bragg terribly. I do hope he hasn't taken it personally. -

You say Joan Collins once had an affair with Arthur Lowe? I find this highly implausible. https://microblog.mjd.id.au/url/24427
But if it did happen I can imagine how word got out:
"Why Mr. Lowe, what an enchanting young lady you have on your arm this evening! Pardon me, madame, but your name is…?"
"Don't tell him, Collins!" -

Also greatly enjoyed Karen and Bradley's discussion of the golden age of software freedom (and subsequent dark age). Remember it well. At the time I was okay with this new #Ubuntu thing (whatever happened to that?) bundling some non-free drivers in the base install media because by then we'd essentially won, hadn't we? A handful of hard-line vendors still to be swept up, but … -

@tregeagle As you probably know, Karen Sandler (Software Freedom Conservancy, GNOME, etc.) agonised over her proprietary defibrillator. In a recent #FaiF episode, she recounted how she delayed getting the (pre-WiFi, thankfully) implant for quite a while, and would be confronted by friends in tears who simply could not understand her problem with the device that was expected t… -

The dear old commos, still carrying on their unbroken campaign of glorious irrelevance since 1956. Among them them there are indeed only two genders: the one which constitutes the revolutionary intellectual vanguard, and the other who can be very useful helping with mailouts and such. -

@tregeagle Randy Wray is also excellent if you're partial to a slightly drier delivery from somebody apparently born wearing a tie with a jumper and whose first steps were in the direction of a lectern. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5JTn7GS4oA #MMT -

@tregeagle Of the half a dozen or so first-gen #MMT scholars, the best at public engagement is Stephanie Kelton. Her "Angry Birds Approach to Understanding Deficits in the Modern Economy" lecture is from a while ago, but sublime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqTeshy4Vw8 -

@tregeagle Bloomberg thinks I'm a bot - they say because of the "suspicious activity" of disabling #JavaScript - so I can't say for sure, but I'm guessing they are assuming their readership has some prior knowledge of the workings of government bonds, central banks, and the banking system as a whole. I understand a lot of that stuff now, but only as a consequence of being int… -
