I wanted to write about the recession that changed my life more than any other one to date, but discussing that time would give people too close of a fix on my age. Suffice it to say that the commercial and industrial buildings that were boarded up in the town where I went to high school stayed boarded up for around twenty years, so jobs in that part of #SoCal were scarce, but …

Well, the 1998 recession also affected me greatly, because it caused me to focus more directly on technology instead of business (besides the dotcoms closing their doors, many large corporations suddenly realized they did not need most of their management chains, so they gutted their middle managers and many of the first level managers. Together with having an HR instructor in …

Not sure why #AndStatus reposted this, but okay.

@simsa03 Wow!

@guizzy If rok0 is looking to get clothes for kids, sending pics and videos to grandparents will help. I know that most of my grandkids got what they needed because I saw photos often.

I was planning to hold another #Office_hours session tonight on the #Federati #Mumble, but I have not been sleeping well and I'm pretty tired right now. I'll try to talk with you all next Friday or Saturday ... I usually try to get in there around 19:00 US-Pacific (currently that's 02:00 UTC; 21:00 US-Central; 22:00 US-Eastern and US-Atlantic) and stay for 30 minutes to an hour.

One of my brothers works in PubHealth. The non-public #COVID-19 numbers he sees must be quite a bit higher than what the public sees, because he is really serious about not catching it himself and not passing it on unknowingly. I'm serious about it myself, but I did not ever disinfect vegetables after I bring them home.

Think about it. “The Greatest Generation” and their parents lived through a pandemic. About a century later, so are we. They lived through two really big wars, an economic boom, and a depression. They saw communism and fascism, those twin evils, take over major parts of Europe and Asia. In a very short time period—under fifty years—they saw the whole world remade. They…

@geniusmusing The person who wrote that is over-eager with the term "depression". Even the (unmentioned) 1998-1999 recession, with after-effects that lasted a decade, doesn't even qualify. I'd say the 2008-2011 recession was borderline, it could easily have become something that we'd still be in today. And of course 1929 was a depression. But the others were not nearly severe e…

I think someone is a little drunk. Claiming that everyone should abandon all other chat and messaging services and just use IRC. Then responding with the F-word to everyone who points out a reason why that will never happen (e.g., the need to create a "bouncer" to keep one logged in, so that messages posted during one's absence are not lost forever). Drew, get away from the key…

I was just informed that #GS3 (almost 1.5 years old) learned to throw a ball this week. Prior to this, he played fetch the same way the granddoggy played. You would throw the ball, he would go and get it, then bring it back and put it in your hand.

"Hot Spot (C 85)" Redfield was then asked for a definition of hot spots. He said it would include places where more than 5 percent of coronavirus tests come back positive. Looking county by county, he said the majority of the nation is not a hot spot.â**CDC director concedes schools in hot spots face tougher call on reopeningâ**. The â*¦ Continue reading "Hot Spot (C …

'Meow' Attack Has Now Wiped Nearly 4,000 Databases Slashdothttps://nu.federati.net/url/273265 >On Thursday long-time Slashdot reader PuceBaboon wrote: >Ars Technica is reporting a new attack on unprotected databases which, to date, has deleted all content from over 1,000 ElasticSearch and MongoDB databases across the 'net, leaving the calling-card "meow" in its place. > >Most p…

My weight has been up for about two or three months, but in the last few days, it is slightly lower (in US pounds) than 1/10 of the number of the year I was born. Hoping it keeps going in that direction for a while. For the first twenty-five years after high school graduation, my weight mostly stayed within ten pounds of my graduation weight. Why this is important: 1—I fe…

Definitely high school graduation. College (4 year) graduation was a long time afterward. A multiple of the standard 4 years. I grew taller until I was 22 years old, which is when I hit 10lb over graduation weight. But then it stayed mostly stable there. I found a place I'd marked my height on the wall at age 16, and it was only shoulder height. I'd run into someone I knew from…

@mangeurdenuage How tall are you? #Daddy_A is about 6 feet, 5 inches, or close to 2 meters. He won't share his weight, but 275 pounds (125 kg) would not surprise me.

For most of the #1970s, the Spinners (AKA Detroit Spinners) were my favorite group. In #1979, I really appreciated that they were themselves and not immersed too deeply in Disco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xse9ZiCrGik
