@geniusmusing Yeah. :-( I think the #blockwars folks may have indirectly caused this. There are people who file complaints against client apps that don’t build in blocklists against specific servers whose moderation policies they dislike. I think that #Matrix / #Element competes with one or more Google-owned chat-type services. Since they gatekeep the overwhelming majority of…

With #Matrix, the #Riot.im client was replaced by #Element, which is buggy. In the process, the upstream used to produce the #miniVector client was disrupted, so that client is discontinued. #Pattle's developer also decided to discontinued it.
I'll have to look around #F-droid to see what else is available.

#Matrix sharing their view on decentralized reputation as a spam and abuse prevention tool http://status.hackerposse.com/url/22638 There was a similar document shared on Secure Scuttlebutt ( #SSB ) / #Manyverse a while ago. I believe I linked the document, so search my history if you wish to compare. Frankly, I found the SSB document unworkable and error-prone, but this one so…

Though I think they have a lot of stuff they already needed to solve. Trying to fix the #Matrix protocol itself and replace the #Synapse server with something more efficient, while porting features over from #Gitter (both the server and the client ends) is going to increase the strain on their development resources. The recent migration from #Riot.im to #Element (on Android) is…

The #Matrix / #Element company is buying #Gitter from #GitLab and merging Gitter features into their Element client.
@clacke has links to the blog post and to an interview about it.

Okay look. *I* don't use #Signal ( and same for #Telegram ), because I don't want to give my telephone number to anyone except family and close friends. I have enough personal contacts that do use them so that they'd be personally useful if I didn't have that unbreakable obstacle. But I don't object to others choosing such end-to-end encrypted messengers over messaging apps suc…

http://status.hackerposse.com/url/21995 This sounds like a good idea, but (1) as a #Matrix user, I don't think the protocol or the implementing software are "ready for prime time" and (2) I don't see any sign that they have given much thought to NAT, firewalls, or DNS. An organization, once it has sufficient internally technology resources, could quickly get this working, but…

#Riot / Riot.im, the flagship client software for #Matrix is now re-named to #Element. Updates should be appearing in various app stores.

@guizzy Lain's #matrix server hosts a retro room, but it isn't very active.

@musicman I know I don’t use #IRC to its full potential. Maybe once I actually get my #vaporware socnet project going, I’ll have a reason to learn it better. Use a CLI client and a bouncer, use slash commands, spin up an eggdrop. Learn to kick and ban troublesome users.
For now, Quassel and a #Matrix bridge are good enough.

#Riot (Riot-Android) recently introduced an issue where “favorite” rooms disappeared from the favorites list each time the program starts. There is a new version now, but so far, “install failed” on both of the devices I attempted to update. This is yet another hurdle that #Matrix has to get over. Besides all the problems people are noting with the server implementatio…

#Matrix has #E2EE working better now, so it is turned on by default on the next versions of #Riot-Web / #Riot-Desktop, #Riot-iOS, #RiotX-Android. The current #Riot-Android client may not get that, as RiotX-Android is meant to replace it.

@clacke I second that. But from what I understand, the #Matrix founders had been involved in #SIP (which had a rivalry versus #XMPP thanks to its "SIMPLE" messaging protocol ... only recently has the SIP organization decided to work on interop with the XSF).

#Matrix plans:
(1) migratable accounts
(2) move from client-server to mostly peer-to-peer, so homeserver membership optional
(3) turn off matrix.org (which currently hosts 35% of Matrix users) homeserver
