@tuxxus @smj !fediverse i haven't been back to any of the old places since i announced i'd be leaving for the new federated !sdf ... things here have evolved quite a bit since then vis a vis participation, diversity, activity, and quality of notice content; i wonder what the best way is to actually get people to listen and give !gnusocial a proper once-over. this article http://st…

@tuxxus Here's my biggest issue with recruiting people to !gnusocial from, say, Twitter. When I browse Social, I see things I like: a lot of tech discussion, etc. I don't see a lot of general discussion that would be of any interest to most people I know. The content just isn't there for most people, so they see little reason to switch. It's almost like Google+ all over again. A few p…

@echosa Yeah, the classic case of the network effect. I think there's no end value in "getting people to switch" though. The users would undoubtedly be better off without injected advertisement and centralised governing, but I think "just switching" gives no benefit in itself. I generally discuss with people the benefits of decentralisation and community as opposed to…

@mmn @smj @cmhobbs @tuxxus !gnusocial I will say this, though. If we pick a day to advertise and inform people about Social, we need a catchy name for the hashtag. (Let's be honest, there has to be a hashtag. People love hashtags.)
I nominate #FreedomFriday

@echosa @dreamkeepers I'd suggest looking at @rysiek@joindaspora.com's "Breaking the garden walls": http://rys.io/en/88
The post itself is rather old, but essentially the basis of for example this recorded gathering at the latest @ccc conference: https://owncloud.hackerspace.pl/index.php/s/zOycGQnrCOWNz6Z/download

@echosa The big difference between !GNUsocial and #GooglePlus is that the entire corpus of GNUsocial is available through standard protocols. I can't even view GooglePlus in my feed reader, never mind adding a message from a 3rd party client.
-
@bobjonkman2 That means nothing to the average user. The average user sees another social outlet where they move and their friends don't so back they go. Google+ all over again. It doesn't help that the average user doesn't really give a shit about libre, freedom, or privacy, either. That's at least starting to change in very recent history.

@echosa It's not the fault of those people, but the closed apps that run every proprietary service. If #GooglePlus and #Facebook were available using a standard #XMPP client the average user wouldn't care either, but they would have the ability to mix'n'match their discussion no matter where it took place. Those services would then also be in competition with each other, leading …

@xikufrancesc unfortunately i don't agree on segregating part of "internet citizens" just because i dont like who they are or what they think. And i do belive that !gnusocial is for everyone. Its value has nothing to do with types of content and/or types of people. In my opinion for !gnusocial to matter worldwide is has to be adopted for as much people as possible. Later if you disa…
