@bob @thomask @zoowar @drymer @moshpirit This whole conversation (which is more than just this single thread) has been very enlightening and is a good conversation to have about !gnusocial. For those used to Twitter, these little caveats can be huge, or, at the very least, confusing. Privacy is a hot topic right now, as it should be. I did a little Google Sleuthing with my username,…

!gnusocial Is there a way to make an account "private", as in only viewable by people who follow? I know there's a setting to make followers require approval.

!gnusocial Is there a mechanism for transferring accounts or account data between GNU Social instances? For instance, lets say I run an instance for a while, but eventually have to stop running it for whatever reason. Is there a way for the users on my instance to sign up on another instance and transfer everything over so they don't lose all their posts, images, etc?

@takeshitakenji Indeed, *but* if it's a stated weekly thing, like #FreedomFriday and the like, then the rest of the week is superfluous. Every Friday is considered constant and persistent, and skipping a week is really only skipping one day. Perception in an interesting field. Main point: I'd rather err on the side of not posting enough that posting too much. Pestering can be a huge…

@takeshitakenji I disagree. Flooding peoples's feed is an easy way to pester them. I've unfollowed many accounts because they flooded my feed or harped on a particular subject. !gnusocial

!gnusocial I skipped last week, because I don't want to pester people. Also, I'm only making one #FreedomFriday tweet today, because I don't want to pester people.

@smj How about a !gsnoobs group, or something similar? I see it serving two purposes:

1.) It can be a place for people to ask "how do I ..." questions about using GNU Social. We can point new users to it.

2.) If it's the first group someone joins, it can act as guide on how to use groups. (Showing that groups exist, how to join them, how to post to them, etc.)

    Thoughts? !gnusocial #FreedomFriday

@bobjonkman2 That means nothing to the average user. The average user sees another social outlet where they move and their friends don't so back they go. Google+ all over again. It doesn't help that the average user doesn't really give a shit about libre, freedom, or privacy, either. That's at least starting to change in very recent history.

@mmn @smj @cmhobbs @tuxxus !gnusocial I will say this, though. If we pick a day to advertise and inform people about Social, we need a catchy name for the hashtag. (Let's be honest, there has to be a hashtag. People love hashtags.)

    I nominate #FreedomFriday

@tuxxus Here's my biggest issue with recruiting people to !gnusocial from, say, Twitter. When I browse Social, I see things I like: a lot of tech discussion, etc. I don't see a lot of general discussion that would be of any interest to most people I know. The content just isn't there for most people, so they see little reason to switch. It's almost like Google+ all over again. A few p…
