I recently upgraded my #xubuntu to 19.10, and now the UI locks up. I can still get to another shell with CTRL+ALT+F1, and the machine isn't under load. Has anybody else seen this? Any suggestions? #ubuntu #linux

@1iceloops123 Yes, #Debian / #Devuan is easy, almost as easy as #Ubuntu or #LinuxMint, but it seems more reliable.

Also greatly enjoyed Karen and Bradley's discussion of the golden age of software freedom (and subsequent dark age). Remember it well. At the time I was okay with this new #Ubuntu thing (whatever happened to that?) bundling some non-free drivers in the base install media because by then we'd essentially won, hadn't we? A handful of hard-line vendors still to be swept up, but …

The apps they list, in left-right top-down order, are: VLC (free), Skype (non-free), Spotify (non-free), Slack (non-free), Discord (non-free), Corebird (free), Mailspring (free), GIMP (free…

@guy@gnusocial.no My main concern with #systemd is the complexity. Yes, startup scripts may be shorter and easier to read, but putting so much functionality in one component seems like a poor choice for an OS designed around the philosophy of "Do only one thing, and do it well". That said, I've never had a problem on any of my computers attributable to systemd (I have !Debian and …
