I've never played #Minecraft - Is this #Federated software? Is it #FreeSoftware? If so, how can Microsoft control what's happening on someone's private server? Even if such code existed in a #FreeSoftware application, I would have thought there'd be a fork that eliminates that external control. It's time for that now. But if #Minecraft isn't #FreeSoftware aka Free/Libre Open Sou…

An article I recently read talked about the copyright battles of the late 1990s as instructive to what #decentralized, #federated and #peer-to-peer networks will face if and when we become threatening to the big #corpocentric networks. I think it is something we need to think about. Unfortunately, some parts of the #Fediverse (primarily, but not exclusively #Mastodon) have mar…

@sim In other words, we often intentionally try to look like the #corpocentric networks and hide the things that make this one different. Then we are caught off-guard when users (especially new users, but sometimes people who have been around for a year or two) show ignorance about the fundamental differences inherent a #federated network. We need to make it clear, from the beg…

http://status.hackerposse.com/url/19580 This is worth a read. This person has spent some time thinking about these issues. I'm not saying his/her conclusions are "the right" conclusions or that he/she has discovered all the potential issues. But when we discuss these topics, we need to have a (shared) starting point, where everyone understands what particular terms mean. #Fede…

The HN discussion perpetuates the usual misunderstanding of a #Federated network. People claim they must have accounts on multiple instances in order to follow conversations there. But a person really needs only one account on one instance because they can follow accounts on other instances *because Federation*! https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14157801

#unifederate: When a site or service is theoretically #federated, but lacks any functioning peers with which to make theory into reality.
-
@gargron It's complicated. Pump has a few features, such as ability to restrict recipients and a good chunk of former StatusNet users (from before the #bifurcation into two incompatible #federated networks).
-
@maiyannah @moonman @lnxw48 no need, it will "defeat" itself later on (by being sold on low price). As long as #federation remains compatible between all social-network software ( !gnusocial !diaspora #friendica and all the others) we can be a good alternative to those bloated #corporate islands. that is what makes the !fediverse good: #open-source and #federated. :-)
-
So, #GoogleTalk still works and is still #federated #XMPP, but is an #island WRT other #Google services: there are no lines of direct communication with the Google mainland, despite being able to still see the lights on in the distance sometimes.
-
Another example of why one should not let #corpocentric sites be the main locus of one's postings. Best to !selfhost (or at least use #federated sites) and to use centralized sites only to link to your content posted elsewhere. http://url.federati.net/hXUrX

@jaideneverett Welcome :) !GNUsocial is like Twitter, but #non-commercial and #federated. The servers are run by hobbyists and #activists
-
Welcome @geniusmusing to the !fediverse. GM is an active user of another #federated network and is now joining !gnusocial as well.
-
Another #Federated #secure messaging tool: https://ring.cx/ Anyone tried this yet?
-
@deavmi afaik the #deleted posts are a new !gnusocial feature for #federated deleting
-
Of course, I dread the day that someone takes jonkman.ca Can't !selfhost Domain Name Services -- we need an independent, #Federated Domain Name Service!
-
@moshpirit What do you think about the #newhere tag, as used on !Diaspora? If it helps people integrate more easily into the #federated network, maybe we need to do something similar for !gnusocial.
