Beginning with #Thunderbird 78, #OpenPGP support will be built into Thunderbird and #Enigmail will no longer work.
The set of people with whom I communicate with #GPG is very small and growing smaller, so this will not have much of an impact.

With the sudden realization that #Enigmail has been able to decrypt #email permanently upon reception for the last 3 years, I'm excited about using #PGP #crypto w/ #Enigmail again! But, oh, just in time for me #Mozilla broke Enigmail in #Debian: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=909000 #ugh

I actually do really want to secure my data in transit; but it's frustrating to the point of deterrence that the tools for secure transit seem to frequently create more problems for data at rest. #Enigmail maintained similar barriers to PGP use for years, for example: http://status.hackerposse.com/conversation/44450#notice-52884 #crypto

@hishamhm Apparently you haven't used #Thunderbird + #Enigmail.
However, the problem of solving UI/UX vs. security tradeoff is _hard_. If the user has a seamless experience, there is no security to speak of. If the user doesn't know where and how the private key is stored, there is no security to speak of. etc. etc.

@einebiene The #Enigmail plugin for #Thunderbird (or #Iceweasel ) makes it relatively easy to get started. Gnome's(?) #Evolution has integrated #OpenPGP by default.

How to make sure the #Enigmail file you downloaded is the real deal: 1) Download the file and its ‘Open PGP’ signature: http://status.hackerposse.com/url/7025 2) Learn that you must download the key the packages have been signed with: http://status.hackerposse.com/url/7026 3a) Download gpg-curl and configure gpg to download keys securely, as described in http://status.hackerposse…

The biggest problem with #GnuPG encrypted e-mail is that the meta-data is not encrypted, so I expect that #Darkmail will be designed to fix this. The other biggest problem with GnuPG encrypted e-mail is that GnuPG offers no forward secrecy - if your keys are compromised, so are all your previous messages encrypted with those keys. I hope Darkmail fixes that too. And the other other…

Love how the #Enigmail FAQ says "IF a message was confidential enough to be encrypted…" ☹ https://www.enigmail.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=637 !crypto #FAIL
