Finally conceded defeat and installed a mail client on my laptop. Gad, I love #Cyrus #IMAP. A swine to configure on the server (tho' much better than it used to be, on #Debian at least), but it does do a sterling job of synchronising your spam across multiple devices. -

Also greatly enjoyed Karen and Bradley's discussion of the golden age of software freedom (and subsequent dark age). Remember it well. At the time I was okay with this new #Ubuntu thing (whatever happened to that?) bundling some non-free drivers in the base install media because by then we'd essentially won, hadn't we? With the sudden realization that #Enigmail has been able to decrypt #email permanently upon reception for the last 3 years, I'm excited about using #PGP #crypto w/ #Enigmail again! But, oh, just in time for me #Mozilla broke Enigmail in #Debian: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=909000 #ugh -

!TIL: In order to use an HP LaserJet P1005 in #debian I need to use systemd (which I have pinned for good reasons), because I need to install hplip-gui which requires systemd. So, if I want to use this printer, I have to change to a Linux distro (or another unixoid system) that does not depend on systemd. Debian, you're just dying for me. -

Yes, startup scripts may be shorter and easier to read, but putting so much functionality in one component seems like a poor choice for an OS designed around the philosophy of "Do only one thing, and do it well". I'm not sure !Devuan yet has the legendary stability of !Debian, nor a full suite of non- #SystemD applications in its repositories. But I'll be working my computers over to Devuan when it's a good fit. -
