I'm trying to find a good #xmpp → #IRC gateway.... The one that comes w/ #ejabberd seems useless—it wants a separate back-end IRC login for every front-end XMPP session under the same account.... -

@thomask @mikael If anything, it should just be SMTP/IMAP translated into !XMPP and then run over BOSH. Voilà, problem solved! All future RFCs that reinvent the wheel should be required to do it within the XMPP spec. cc: @zash -

...yeah, or just IRC. There are mobile friendly clients, clients integrated for web browser use, multiple desktop varieties. They could even pre-configure and brand a "Creative Commons chat client" since it's all !floss. @bobjonkman, at this point #GoogleTalk is (just) a pretty shitty #XMPP server: it's missing a whole bunch of important XEPs like Carbons and fully-functional MUCs, and it doesn't do back-end #TLS so most (better) servers will refuse to talk to it. -

So, #GoogleTalk still works and is still #federated #XMPP, but is an #island WRT other #Google services: there are no lines of direct communication with the Google mainland, despite being able to still see the lights on in the distance sometimes. -
