@jd yeah it does look like the Balmuda is timer-based, not doneness-based (he says "3 and a half minutes" as he sets the dial)..., so that's like..., how many steps forward vs. how many steps back? Also he's using special bread with it? -

@rozzin Hmmm... a toaster oven with steam? Is that a timer or a doneness sensor he is setting? -

On the 50th anniversary of the #apollo #moonlanding, I had to consider the #progress of the last half-century: not only can we no longer visit other worlds, we can't even make a damned decent piece of #toast anymore....

Hmm..., @jd it looks like your #toaster might have some competition... sort-of... maybe? http://status.hackerposse.com/url/18983
This whole "toasting without desiccating" idea is fascinating. Especially after I blew through a whole loaf of bread last week trying to get enough toasted-but-still-soft-enough-to-bite-through slices for 3 sandwiches....
Is this another case of "easy 50 years ago but impossible now"? -

I wonder if I'd be less critical of this sort of !hack'ability of systems of law if I'd ever seen anyone actually use the power for good; but it seems like it only ever gets used for..., I don't know—for teh lulz? -

@mjd I hope #NULL plate guy does follow through and can have an effect. This ` !hack the #law that rules everyone's lives by selling #government shitty legacy #software with no support contract' thing does appear to be... a thing. An extremely #dangerous thing. #consideredharmful -

Slightly more detail at Mashable: https://mashable.com/article/dmv-vanity-license-plate-def-con-backfire/
«"Basically," observed Droogie, "this is bullshit”
After contacting the DMV and the LAPD, and painstakingly explaining his situation, they both told him the same thing: change your plates.
"I said, 'No, I didn’t do anything wrong.'"» -

I think I learned something about #Facebook today: people use it because it has #groups like !GNUsocial! Well, sort-of? @palmella tells me that, *unlike* GNU social groups, Facebook heavily moderates (modulates?) the delivery of group-posts to users' home streams in ways that don't necessarily have obvious explanations.... -

Someone just asked me to recommend a good #git #book; I finally conceded that `do a #websearch for "git config.ff only"' is probably best—because any teacher who doesn't tell you to do that as part of your most basic git setup is probably someone you shouldn't listen to. -

@rozzin Indeed. I collect them, clean them up, bring them back to life, pass them on. So a number of family members and my neighbor also have one. You can get them for $20 to $200 on eBay. Why not? They are the best toasters ever made. Sunbeam appears to have made a lot of them. And they last. -

@jd aaah—I was thinking you just *really* liked #toast, if you had a toaster for every room ☺ -

Indeed, I have several of those exact Sunbeam Automatic Toasters. I prefer the oldest T-20 models before they started engineering cost out. They are wonderful. -

A new way (or a #GNU way...) to feel #olde: "why, I remember when all these #POSIX standard features were still GNU-specific!" -

I do love the origin story for the #POSIX #name, from #rms:
«The committee put on "IEEEIX" as the concise name. I did not think that was a good choice. It is ugly to pronounce—it would sound like a scream of terror, "Ayeee!" …» -

Oh, hey—I was recently quoted in this article on opensource.com: "What is POSIX? Richard Stallman explains—Discover what's behind the standards for operating system compatibility from a pioneer of computer freedom" https://opensource.com/article/19/7/what-posix-richard-stallman-explains
