It has been 10 years since the discovery of the Higgs boson. I shared my recollections of that day, as well as perspectives on the meaning and implications of the discovery, in our book "Reality in the Shadows" w/ Frank Blitzer and @Dr_JimGates https://www.amazon.com/Reality-Shadows-What-Hecks-Higgs/dp/1936411393/

Seen via @sullybiker http://status.hackerposse.com/url/23982 Microsoft bans in #Minecraft will soon carry over to privately run servers as well. One commenter said "Seems like there is a really simple solution here: Don't be a toxic asshole on a public server." But once $CORPORATION starts interfering with privately hosted servers in any way, those servers' independence and exi…

I've never played #Minecraft - Is this #Federated software? Is it #FreeSoftware? If so, how can Microsoft control what's happening on someone's private server? Even if such code existed in a #FreeSoftware application, I would have thought there'd be a fork that eliminates that external control. It's time for that now. But if #Minecraft isn't #FreeSoftware aka Free/Libre Open Sou…

People, not all people but most people, are angry about the wrong thing.
I agree that Roe v Wade being canceled is a bad outcome. I agree that women should have the right to their bodies, but here's my possibly unpopular take:
A Supreme Court that doesn't give a damn what the public wants ... is exactly what a Supreme Court is for, actually.

"A Supreme Court that doesn't give a damn what the public wants ... is exactly what a Supreme Court is for, actually." True enough. But elected representatives in government *are* supposed to do what people want, that's why they get elected. If they had fulfilled their obligations to actually represent the citizens' wants then the Supreme Court wouldn't have to act at all. It all…

I've been wanting to get a #BeagleBone AI for a while. I saw one for sale, so I ordered it. I can't find an MSRP, but I can guess that I paid more than that.

Linux puzzle ...at least to me. I dd a rasbian image to a new sd card. First time the image is no good (gets the root partion, but no boot partition). But the second dd works.
- Joshua Judson Rosen repeated this.
-
@ussndmac, that is weird—especially given that the boot partition is earlier in the image; I'd expect it to fail exactly the opposite way...
-
@ussndmac, only idea leaping to mind: maybe the OS running dd is automounting the newly-created FAT FS before dd finishes—and autofubars it?
-
@rozzin Hmm...the mount too soon idea could be, but then the question would be wht the second time works differently.
I've not tried to duplicate the issue on anything but ubuntu (.i.e. a pi running raspbian or even something running vanilla debian).
