#Hurricane #Isaias getting stronger over the Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas. Now forecast to pass E of #Florida ( #FL ) and possibly come ashore in #NC or #SC.

Back in the olden days of 2006 / 2007, it was easy. Install #Tomcat. Stop Tomcat (so it isn't running). Grab the #Alfresco .WAR file and drop it into the proper directory within Tomcat. Start Tomcat. Once it has extracted the WAR file, stop Tomcat again and edit some configs (for example, enter database info, enable or disable various services and functionality). Start it again…

That machine was not on a UPS, so my time of experimenting with #Alfresco ended when a power outage followed by a power surge damaged the disk

There must be a "Branch Floridian" cult or something behind all the weird stuff that comes out of #Florida. #FL is just too weird for there to be a different explanation that does not involve space aliens.

Reading about the old neighborhood where I lived during high school. It wasn't the best neighborhood even back then, but it appears to be overrun with druggies and prostitutes now. Surprising because they priced the existing residents out decades ago. The new residents had more money, and yet, the area's decline is severe enough that it is easily found in a web search. Also, th…

For the record, "startup" is a bad word in the enterprise space as well. They think "Why would I trust my 10K-100K users and related infrastructure to 'two guys in a garage'?". By which they mean that they need reliability and they need support resources that they'll rarely use, but which must be available if and when they do use them. When $EMPLOYER migrated to an ActiveDirec…

The funny thing is that in a lot of cases, enterprise software is so complicated that it becomes unreliable.
I love seeing dozens of messages in my inbox about some outage in an "enterprise" system. It seems to happen about once per week.

@guizzy You should start now on learning what it takes to ship Mitsu a sample of your cooking.

yeah, the whole "Enterprise" thing is our marketing thing. Like I don't know if our sales people would literally tell a startup to go to Tidelift because it is harder to get a company to switch than to join but to me Tidelift is our only competitor. That said, what we offer is very different than what Tidelift offers. I know some in the organization see Red Hat as a competitor,…
-
@musicman Yeah, well “enterprise” does seem to be the magic word that unlocks corporate (and government) CIOs’ ears and turns their attention to what the salesperson is presenting.
-
well, "enterprise" is largely a bad word in the startup space, to be equated with slow and/or complicated. I am having a related argument about Java. Maybe it is true that the Java ecosystem is too complicated. I was just yesterday unable to get something to work in IntelliJ and I have no idea why. It works in #Eclipse. In any case, I think the Java-naysayers probably don't kno…

Good morning and #TZAG, everyone. I'm having my daily #YoCo ( #yogurt and #coffee ). The small ants are aggressively foraging for food, as if they expect Winter to resemble movies, with snow and ice. The large ants seem to be calmer, but both of them are covering a larger area than I've seen before. . We're in a heat wave here, with peaks at or above 100°F / 38°C. I'm just …

For some reason, this reminds me of hearing that people called TV stations to complain about their weather forecasters making it too hot/cold/wet/dry. As if "Ty the weather guy" has any control of the weather.

Misunderstanding as a tactic. Today I watched a discussion where one person repeatedly summarized the other side's PoV in ways that IMO require active and intentional misinterpretation.
-
@simsa03 Eventually, they reacted with cursing and the 'misunderstanding' person suddenly backed off, claiming not to have understood.

After yesterday's tornado warning in #Kansas City, #NOAA / # NWS has sent around 50 alerts about flooding. If you're in that area stay out of low lying areas and normally dry places that have water in them. That includes roads that aaare flooded.

How to stop magical thinking in school reopening plans This item caught my eye: Does your plan put unreasonable demands on educators? Its cool. Nobody actually cares what educators think. At least, that is the impression we all get. https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2020/07/30/how-stop-magical-thinking-school-reopening-plans/

I'd be very careful about underestimating #Russia's military. As a number of its former #USSR / #CCCP sister republics have learned, the primary obstacle to #Putin's dream of rebuilding the empire is Russia itself, not any opposing nation.

If #Twitter's #BlueSky project would up recommending they federate in a way that is compatible with existing projects, what would happen?
Well, just about every Fediverse instance in existence would fall over under the load. We'd all have to block T at the firewall and hope that would be enough. A lot of $5 droplets would probably go over their monthly data allocations, too.

I would be a lot more open to undoing a lot of the lockdowns if the people promoting it were willing to do what is required: 1--personal responsibility: the things we're told every day ... wash hands frequently, mask up if we go out, avoid getting closer than 6 feet / 2 meters from other people; 2--corporate: restructure workplace and processes to reduce the spread of disease, …

Q: Are more people committing suicide due to #COVID-19 related lockdowns and job losses?
A: There is no way to tell for a few years. We do not know and we can not know until final figures are in and we're looking back at this time period.
