From seeing all these “Jake from State Farm” commercials, I have a couple of questions. First of all, they re-cast the character. A few years ago, Jake was portrayed by a different actor. Why re-cast? (Seriously ... it is unusual to replace your central character’s actor and still continue the series.) I guess the implication is that any employee that answers calls himse…

Einstellung — when you’re trying to learn or perform, but your mind is so tightly locked on something you learned in the past that it cannot back off and take a second look at the situation.
This is very likely not a complete and accurate description of its meaning, but that’s the way it was used in today’s lectures.
It is a German loan-word, so I’ll throw it into a translator site later.

From T_Inglesby https://twitter.com/T_Inglesby on Twitter: It's as if leaders don't want to know: "Some [states] claimed that coronavirus data on schools was not critical to protecting the broader public...And only a handful of states said they would report the actual numbers of infected students and staff." 2/x

@musicman Somehow VMware related, based on your links.

Pivotal was spun out as a separate company from VMWare...and then years later repurchased by VMWare.
Truth is stranger than fiction...

@guizzy No wonder the French are reknowned lovers. ;-)

Efforts to mount a rescue of #GSNO appear to have failed. If you’re a user of #gnusocial.no, you have about two weeks to grab your data and find a new #Fediverse home. You can see a list of some public !gnusocial instances at https://gnusocial.network/try/

One of my sisters is back at school. The students are still doing online work from home, but the teachers are actually in their classrooms. They’re using #Zoom (a class-wide session in the morning and another one in the afternoon) and using some online curriculum in between. The school district’s IT department is overloaded. They’re on “no overtime”, but they aren’…

Cold front that brought wicked weather last night brought a beautiful morning. Went for a 6 mile run and it was ONLY 70F outside. Ran past a "COVID-pack": local cross-country team out practicing, clumped together on narrow sidewalk, no masks, hootin' and hollarin'. Doomed.

Oh, is that why I have not seen @mangeurdenuage around lately?

Today’s reading: Perfect Hash Function https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_hash_function
Apparently, this is a collision-free hash that maps elements of the set to integers.
I’ve seen things like “ace” and “ace-gperf” in Debian / Ubuntu repositories for years, but never bothered to find out what a perfect hash function is.
-
That’s ace-gperf and gperf.

An insect invasion appears to have destroyed an entire container of turnips, radishes, carrots. I need to dig out the roots tomorrow and see whether they are usable. I pulled over a dozen caterpillars out of there this evening.

Got a few minutes of rain. Not enough, but it did get slightly cooler for less than an hour. It wasn't heavy enough ti cause any flooding. I still had to water my garden.

I missed having our weekly #videochat with #sonOne and #GD1 and #GD2 again, but I did get about fifteen minutes with #GS3.
He showed me his toy truck and said “trunk”, but would not repeat it.
Then he called me “Dadda”, just like he calls both of his parents.
He learned to ask “What is that?”, but he did not say it during our call.

From DFWscanner https://twitter.com/DFWscanner on Twitter: An outflow boundary from a thunderstorm has kicked up significant winds and blowing dust across Highway 287 near Blue Mound Road. This should not last long. Use caution in the area. (Photo: Jessica Carow) https://twitter.com/DFWscanner/status/1295145007574327297/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/67077
