That's interesting. So far, more than one of the anti-malaria drugs I've read about (on #Wikipedia ... I'm not at the level yet where I could read a study abstract and come away with any kind of high-level overview or feeling of understanding) have a statement to the effect "we don't really know how or why this works". Tonight's reading was http://status.hackerposse.com/url/221…

My mom is getting pretty aggressive about spouting political stuff, so I had to explain to her that non-obsessed people have other things to think about besides politics. I also explained how I had to drop several prolific polly-posters from my timeline, and how much better I felt once I got rid of people dumping their trash in my face. Naturally, she didn't want to hear that, …

A couple of Fediverse people helped @amic@nulled.red to get another car after the 1988 Toyota Camry sustained $3.5K worth of damage in a collision.

A couple of people from work are starting their periodic security background investigations. I don't remember anything detailed about either one (it has probably been 5 years since I worked with K, and 4 since I worked with I).

Sometimes I wonder how to correctly pronounce "Quebecois", but I never bother searching YouTube or Vimeo, where there is likely someone demonstrating it.

I normally have two single-serving yogurts as part of my breakfast. (Two different brands.) Since March, my local Target has only had one flavor (not my favorite at all) of brand F. As of a week or two ago, they no longer stock brand T. It means I have to travel to WinCo or Stater Bros to get yogurt--and if I'm going that far anyway, what other things that I usually get at Targ…

!SoCal #San_Bernardino County deputy fired https://www.sacbee.com/news/california/article245305330.html [www sacbee com]
It is rare for any #Inland_Empire cop to be fired, no matter how bad the conduct. And even then, they typically get hired by another department in the area.

Someone mentioned that his new crutches were causing pain in his armpits. I told him that most of his weight should be on his hands, lest he cause permanent nerve damage in his armpits.
About an hour later, as the pain left, he thanked me.
-
How I knew:
#sonOne spent over two years on crutches after a bicycle crash in high school. #sonTwo followed suit about a decade later, but his foot healed faster, so he was done in under a year.
-
When they give people these things, don’t they show them how to use them anymore?
-
@geniusmusing Another reason to dislike insurance companies. It's only a few minutes, since they have to adjust the crutches to the patient's body anyway, and it saves the patient some pain and possible long-term medical costs.

On my cellphone ( AT&T #ATT_Wireless ), there's some weird proxy that interacts badly with this instance's security settings. I'm attempting to figure it out, but I might have to use a #VPN every time I'm away from #Wi-Fi until I figure it out.
This never happened with #Sprint.

@diogo remember me?

There was a whole family in Target that didn’t know “wear a mask” means cover both your mouth and your nose. Dad and middle child wore their masks on their chins, Mom and oldest child covered mouth, but not nose. Youngest child is an infant, so being unmasked is the correct course of action.

#Laura is now a #TropStorm, since about 13:00 US-Central. The storm is known to have caused 4 deaths since it landed last night. https://nu.federati.net/url/274415 [www upi com]
However, the storm moved through #LA and #TX pretty quickly, so it appears to have caused less damage than expected.

If I were to give a presentation on #ApacheCassandra, what would you want it to be on?
-
@musicman Tough question, because I’ve already had some exposure. If I hadn’t, though, I’d probably want a start-to-finish why and when I might want to use #Cassandra instead of $COMPETING_NOSQL_DB ( where the competing DB is one of the top 2-3 names in enterprise NoSQL databases ). Obviously, with a demonstration.
-
I think a fair chunk of the audience will have had *some* exposure.
MongoDB would seem to be a good choice in this comparison talk. I'm not sure what else we support off the top of my head. I know we have talked about neo4j and Arrango. I'm almost certain we said no to Arrango. I think neo4j is still waiting to be onboarded, but I guess my talk could be part of the onboarding if that's the case.

I get that it is FLOSS so normal marketing rules don't apply, but saying your beta software is the most stable software you have ever produced is kinda yikes:
https://cassandra.apache.org/blog/2020/07/20/apache-cassandra-4-0-beta1.html
-
@musicman You’re right. And if I’m an enterprise user of something older, it might make me want to pull the records to see whether #Cassandra has been at the root of a lot of issues. OTOH, also as an enterprise user, if $COMPANY has already committed to using #Apache Cassandra, this might be “it is getting better, so now’s the time to go all in” time.
-
maybe if you don't do RC, but go straight from beta to release this makes more sense. I don't know the Apache way on that, or if the different projects are left to their own devices on that.
-
you know, if they had just said "improved stability" wouldn't have gone full https://nu.federati.net/url/274427

#Hurricane #Laura has sustained wind speeds of 150-155MPH. We may learn after the fact that it was indeed a Category 5.
Expecting ocean water to be up to 20 feet above normally dry ground and for the water to reach up to 30 miles inland.
This is probably one of the 10 biggest storms to strike the Continental US since tracking and measurement began.
