Was suddenly unable to print from #Win10. Tried all the standard tricks. Then I realized what happened. Two routers / #Wi-Fi access points. When The computer connects to the closer of the two, the #WSD port decides the printer is "offline", even though I can view the printer's configuration web page with a browser. #lazyNephew revealed some previously undisclosed things he discovered on former neighbor Steve's open #Wi-Fi network. Apparently browsing an unsecured SMB share led to the neighbor's porn being discovered by his wife.
I can't say how much is true, but I did know about Steve's network. -

On my cellphone ( AT&T #ATT_Wireless ), there's some weird proxy that interacts badly with this instance's security settings. I'm attempting to figure it out, but I might have to use a #VPN every time I'm away from #Wi-Fi until I figure it out.
This never happened with #Sprint. -

@geniusmusing I never even knew that some grills are #Wi-Fi capable. If someone wants to track what I'm eating, they can talk to my bank. No need to give them a direct line to the grill. -

@geniusmusing The routers at work are centrally managed by another agency, so no experience to recommend by. I know #sonOne is using a #Ubiquiti router with #Wi-Fi, but I don't know specifics. -

Perhaps they've got VNC as part of a virtualization system or built into some #IoT device they bought. I should try out FairEmail on my phone. Something about Samsung’s power settings prevents K-9 from fetching messages except when I manually tell it to do so. This is even true on some #Wi-Fi networks. -

I was seriously thinking the #Synology #NAS's weird permissions settings and the collection of client apps were too much hassle for a limited benefit. But being able to play the same song on every device I own when I'm in reach of the home #Wi-Fi is a powerful attractant.
Now that it is working again, let's see how long it takes them to fill 7TiB of space. -

Bought an expensive USB #WiFi dongle from #Jaycar, foolishly thinking it was still the golden age of devices supporting free operating systems, and that it would Just Work™. Then tried various drivers found on Github, then tried NDISwrapper, then was about to give up when it occurred to me to compile the (non-free, presumably) kernel module on the driver CD. Works perfectly. #facepalm -

I hate #WiFi. I rotated my office desk by 90°, and now I'm watching a progress bar as I save a text file of a few kilobytes from my laptop to my desktop ten meters away. Why? Should I be sprinkling holy water on my desk to appease the WiFi gods? There should be ethernet everywhere you have electricity. You have to have a cord anyway; why not add eight teeny little wires to it? -

I did a VoIP demonstration using my laptop as a #WiFi hotspot with !FreeSWITCH in a VM, maybe 4 connections, but it was too slow to be useful. 3 GHz i5, 8 GB RAM -

Final note for today: I think I've *finally* solved my internet connection problems (with wicd on Ubuntu): When I arrived in Amsterdam the line connection worked perfectly, not a beep from the WiFi connection, and now back in Groningen I got the line connection working (and seemingly stable) when I arrived, and also not a meep from WiFi! @der @bobjonkman Not just your employer's computer. I used to get catalogs of MITM appliances sent to me at work. The vendors were targeting chains of #coffee shops and eateries that offered #WiFi access. I suspect you're being MITM'd every time you use Internet at a hotel, too. -
