Bought an expensive USB #WiFi dongle from #Jaycar, foolishly thinking it was still the golden age of devices supporting free operating systems, and that it would Just Work™. Then tried various drivers found on Github, then tried NDISwrapper, then was about to give up when it occurred to me to compile the (non-free, presumably) kernel module on the driver CD. Works perfectly. #facepalm
