post-tropical cyclone #Zeta continues to move rapidly. The center of the storm is over Delaware, about to cross into the ocean (most of the storm is already at sea). Yesterday afternoon / evening, it was heading into Louisiana and Mississippi. #NOAA / #NHC has issued its last advisory about the storm. http://status.hackerposse.com/url/21794 Along the way, parts of #DE #MD #VA …

It looks like the center of #Hurricane #Zeta is moving onshore near New Orleans, #LA, right about now. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ I haven't seen any news stories about evacuations, but there must be. I don't know how high the storm surge is, but a high surge can ride inland for a few miles, meaning that normally dry land temporarily becomes part of the ocean.

#NOAA / #NHC #Hurricane #Zeta nearing the northern Gulf Coast. The map on https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ still looks like New Orleans #LA is in or near the likely direct impact zone.

#NOAA / #NHC https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ tracking #TropStorm #Zeta, now having crossed the Yucatán Peninsula and expected to strengthen and pass near New Orleans, #LA.

I’m positive I couldn’t see THIS prison from the highway, but I did see an old prison near the #LA - #MS border. From “the time when they knew how to punish people”.
I’ve never beed incarcerated, but my impression is that modern US prisons are still horrible, but much less so than they used to be.

#NOAA / #NWS #TD22 in the Gulf of Mexico is now #TropStorm #Beta ... expected to soak parts of #MX, #TX, #LA; #Hurricane #Teddy expected to pass East of #Bermuda, then swing across #Canada's Maritime Provinces

Mark told me that the news showed quite a bit of damage in #AL from #Hurricane #Sally. I hope there are no chemical plants in that area. There were a few days of "shelter in place" in #LA after a recent hurricane caused a fire at such a plant.

Glanced at PowerOutage.us ... looks like Cameron Parish, #LA, is still about 85% without power. Overall, it looks like 45% of the state is out. Most is due to #hurricane #Laura that went through the state a couple of weeks back.
There's an important caveat in that PowerOutage does not track all of the state's electric providers, so its figures could be high OR low.

#TD-19 forms East of #FL ... expected to cross into the Gulf of Mexico and target the coast between the Florida panhandle and #LA. #NOAA / #NWS https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

Hmm. I've noticed that no one ever seems to have a positive impression of #IA. I've worked for months at a time in some neighboring states ( #NE, #MO, #KS ) and never had a similar impression about them. What's especially bad about Iowa?
(I've also worked in #MS and #LA, so I might just have a rosier view.)

#Laura is now a #TropStorm, since about 13:00 US-Central. The storm is known to have caused 4 deaths since it landed last night. https://nu.federati.net/url/274415 [www upi com]
However, the storm moved through #LA and #TX pretty quickly, so it appears to have caused less damage than expected.

I really only know one person in #LA ... a former #Fediverse member (and #HPR contirbutor) who is a professor at one of the state universities.
Unfortunately, he’s really busy, and I don’t really have a channel to ask how things are going.

In the Eastern Pacific, Tropical storms have formed: #TropStorm Hernan and TS Iselle. Current forecasts expect the storms to turn westward and dissipate around Sunday/Monday. In the Atlantic / Gulf of Mexico, #Hurricane #Laura is a category 4 storm, expected to bring storm surge up to 20 feet above normally-dry ground. Still expected to reach the #TX / #LA shore this evening. …

Major #Hurricane #Laura still heading toward the #TX / #LA border area as a Category 4. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
Note: extremely dangerous ... if you’re in that area and have not prepared, get on the road NOW.

Looking at #NOAA / #NHC site: https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
#TropStorm #Marco is starting to break apart as it makes landfall in #LA. Expected to become post-tropical depression by late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
TS #Laura expected to become a hurricane tomorrow, head for #TX or LA, with landfall Wednesday evening or Thursday morning.
-
#NOAA / #NHC: #Hurricane #Marco is in the Gulf of Mexico. Current projections say it should weaken before it makes landfall some time tomorrow along #MS - #LA - #TX coastline. #TropStorm #Laura is over and West of Hispaniola ( #Haiti and #DR ), expected to go over #Cuba before entering the Gulf tomorrow night / Tuesday morning and becoming a hurricane itself. Looks like it may …
-
It looks like #TropStorm #Marco has moved North and East relative to yesterday’s forecast, so the new projection has it striking Southeast #LA as a hurricane on Monday 2020-08-24. TS #Laura is over and to the West of #PR. The #NOAA / #NHC forecast shows it going right over Hispaniola and Cuba (with some impacts in the Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas. Current projection shows…
-
Latest #NOAA / #NHC forecast track has #TropStorm #Marco becoming a hurricane today or tonight, then weakening Monday and being pushed West into #TX on Tuesday or Wednesday. TropStorm #Laura now expected to go across Hispaniola and Cuba, becoming a hurricane overnight Monday-Tuesday and hitting #LA Wednesday night.
-
Looking at the #NOAA / #NHC site. #TropStorm #Marco forms, should pass over part of the #Yucatan, then head across the Gulf toward #TX or #LA. To the east of that, TropStorm #Laura is bigger, but sloppy. Expected to pass near or over #PR, Hispaniola ( #DR and #Haiti), #Cuba, #Caymans, #Bahamas, then enter the Gulf of Mexico before becoming a hurricane http://status.hackerposse.…
