Let me fix that for you, Washington Post. To quote Sagan, science is more than a body of knowlege; its a way of thinking. Science as a practice isnt the problem here; lack of good data to draw conclusions is. Experimenting on kids is unconscionable, so we wait and see. https://twitter.com/drsekula/status/1281556798869311491/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/66023

Hearing and seeing someone's fireworks and remembering one night I saw some fireworks shows from above as I rode in a plane.
These are not very high up, so they're barely visible over houses and trees.

Wow. This breeze feels refreshingly cool outside, but AccuWeather says it is 78°F here. 89°F in my room, so that's why.

A year or two ago, I bought an apple tree, one of the ones where they graft on four different varieties. Last year, all four produced fruit. This year, two branches produced. In yesterday's windstorm, one branch's apples (there were two [2]) were blown down. They were not ready. Another branch lost one (1) apple to the wind, but its fruit were about pick-ready anyway (a few day…

I promised #GS3 that I would send him a surprise, so I bought him a toy truck. It is stamped "1+ year". That's "lorry" if you're from the UK or its nearby islands.

Every single [faculty member] volunteered to offer an in-person, one-on-one tutorial to our international students [to avoid their deportation] ... One of my colleagues told me that he would teach outside in the snow if he needed to. https://www.forbes.com/sites/stuartanderson/2020/07/09/trump-move-against-international-students-may-have-backfired/

From gsiskind https://twitter.com/gsiskind on Twitter: Warning - Long tweet thread coming. I'm summing up the Harvard v. DHS complaint challenging ICE in its attempt to force F-1 students to leave the US if their courses are being offered online this fall. They lawyers did a superb job. I think you'll find this interesting.

From chronicle https://twitter.com/chronicle on Twitter: ICEs policy was viewed by many as a backdoor effort by the Trump administration to force colleges to reopen to face-to-face instruction. https://www.chronicle.com/article/As-MITHarvard-Sue/249142

June: our uni. had 27 cases of an individual on-campus confirmed with COVID-19; that's 0.93 cases per day. No in-person classes. Since July 1, we've had 9 such cases, or 1.0 per day. Will take time to see if that is a genuine increase. In person classes began this week.

From COVID19Tracking https://twitter.com/COVID19Tracking on Twitter: Nationally, the 7-day average in deaths has begun to rise after an extended decline. The last three days were the highest numbers weve since early June. https://twitter.com/COVID19Tracking/status/1281358546907480064/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/66012

was really confused for a bit... 'sudo systemctl stop firealld'

I assume that's missing a 'w' ... firewalld.
I'm still using iptables directly, planning to move into nftables soon.

yep, I ran nmap locally and was like...well, it's listening. I ran nmap remotely and it returned filtered. Perhaps the weirdest thing is that before when I have tried to install manually with the firewall on things have gotten in an unrecoverable stat. This latest install I was using Ansible, and the Ansible playbook seems to have taken care of the port situation. That said, m…
