If you want to listen to two reasonable people lose hope because, perhaps, they just discovered where the sidewalk ends... ... listen to this episode of "Make Me Smart" entitled "Open the Schools, Or Else" https://www.marketplace.org/shows/make-me-smart-with-kai-and-molly/open-the-schools-or-else/

I did try to understand #Functors and #Monads through https://dzone.com/articles/functor-and-monad-examples-in-plain-java ... but it didn’t help.

One of my favorite movies is "The Empire Strikes Back". I saw it when I was about 4-5 years old. I also love the radio drama of the same name, from NPR. It provides extra depth and more time to develop characters and stories. Two ways of telling the same story. Both beloved.
-
This week I also learned that SMU used to have a radio station, KSMU. Anyone know when that went away (and why?). Anyone know where the broadcast facility used to be? Was it on or off campus?
-
Things I learned this week: SMU used to have (ca 1968) a 2 Mega-Volt Van de Graaf Accelerator, as well as a subcritical research and teaching nuclear reactor. These were housed in what later came to be known as the Lyle School of Engineering.

From COVID19Tracking https://twitter.com/COVID19Tracking on Twitter: But the problems extend beyond those hotspots. 15 states reported over 1000 cases today. Georgia reported nearly 4500. https://twitter.com/COVID19Tracking/status/1281713182889791488/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/66035

It looks like deaths - which should lag hospitalizations, which themselves lag reported cases, which themselves lag actual infections - have begun to climb. The descent of deaths in early-hit states is now offset by the rise in states currently drowning in pandemic. https://twitter.com/COVID19Tracking/status/1281707538640060416

And now Mark is on the phone. He's on the freeway en route to his GF's house. We'll probably talk until he reaches the hills and gets cut off.
-
S asked me to take notes on the conference call, but there wasn't really much worth repeating.
-
There really wasn't anything worth taking notes.
-
On the phone with Kenny from work. He says his area of #NorCal is in the middle of a heat wave, with temperatures over 100F.
We have that here, but this is the first day of it and it should last until Monday.
-
HR is holding up a pay increase that we were promised years ago.
I don't expect that we'll get back pay for the entire period that we've been waiting, either.

Everyone keeps telling me there’s no download needed for #Zoom, but #MSEdge needed a download in order to handle the meeting. (I did not join a previous Zoom meeting my family held in mid-May because it needed a plugin downloaded for #Firefox.) Today, my co-worker S refused to join because of the plugin download for #MSIE 11.
-
My first #Zoom conference. Fortunately, we're not using webcams. They're showing slides.

Ugh! Two hours. At least it is over.

Opening schools is the red herring. The real issue is the absolute lack of safety net or social structure that has led Americans to think that opening schools is the only salvation. https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/the-pandemic-didnt-create-working-moms-struggle-but-it-made-it-impossible-to-ignore/2020/07/07/bcc021c4-bbb8-11ea-bdaf-a129f921026f_story.html
