It finally happened. Yesterday, Collin County reported 102 deaths from COVID-19. Today? 95. That's right. COVID-19 has spawned the undead.

I recall taking a course in the #COBOL language back in the MSDOS days. They were offering COBOL and #Fortran courses for that semester only. Not owning a computer at the time, I wasn’t stuck trying to buy a compiler ... but it did mean that I had to wait for access to one of the two computers in the campus labs which had the software ... and adhere to their strict limits on …

1990s: Browser vendors and ZoneAlarm firewall invent interruptive security.
Your machine received a packet on port 139 from 192.168.1.7. Do you want to allow or block?

Of course, that was when #Win95 / #Win98 / #Win98SE had no security on file sharing. And when people often plugged directly into cable modems and your “network neighborhood” was actually everyone in your neighborhood with cable Internet.
Still, I’m glad that we’ve gotten beyond constantly interrupting people to have them make choices about whether to allow or deny network requests.

I remember one of my brothers got cable back then. They told him that he should never turn off his computer or it might lose its IP address. I showed him his “Network Neighborhood” and suggested ZoneAlarm as a temporary measure until he could purchase a router. One of my sisters’ husband got a laptop with Wi-Fi. It turned out that someone named “Steve” (based on the …

@vegos LOL. I missed everything before I finally bought a used computer in 1997 (running #Win3.1 ... or maybe Windows for Workgroups 3.11 ... the previous owner had all sorts of stuff; gopher, archie, ftp, a collection of women in swimsuits images; a winsock program)

Is 2002 the current O365? That’s the one that is downloading now. “Microsoft Office O365 Pro Plus Full Install 2002 Update”

You know, with #Flash being removed from browsers late this year or early next year at the latest, I often wonder why it is still there. I know it was bundled in Chromium based browsers, but by now they should have stopped doing that.

@guizzy @mitsu@shitposter.club "Oh, just look at you two. Little seeds of romance blossoming in the savannah. ...." -- Zazu, in The Lion King

That’s the second time today that I used that quote. It must be time to re-watch The Lion King. The original, not a live action remake.
-
Let’s see what updates we have today. The $EMPLOYER machine runs on a different schedule than my personal #Win10 laptop (and a widely different set of software, too).

Got a message from one of the airlines. My miles won't expire Saturday after all. I have until the end of the year. Now if only the car rental companies and the other airlines would do the same.
-
I think one or two hotel chains did this already. The companies that gleefully took back my points / miles will find me "gleefully" avoiding them (when possible). Y'all can shut your doors and sell the CEO's mansion.

Okay, it took a little while to get in, but I have successfully conected.

I can only assume that the shipment mentioned in @guizzy’s link was mis-labelled and come from a “trusted” shipper. I would expect that the assumed trusted shipper will temporarily lose its status. If it was not a trusted shipper, I expect some people in #TSA will lose their jobs or at least be demoted over this. I know that military cargoes have to be shipped somehow (…

Went looking for a particular _Lion King_ quote and wound up really wanting to re-watch the whole movie.

There are some pretty skilled people in the agency, but we frequently have them doing something peripheral to their skills.
Part of that is the way we're divided into central and field staff, with tasks (and systems) being divided similarly.

Today is the Dedman College Chair's Retreat. Of course, it's all on Zoom. I don't know why I came out to this spot in the woods, now. We were never going to be together. I hope there aren't bears. This is supposed to be $EMPLOYER day, but they're in the third consecutive day of #VPN issues. While it may not affect me (I won't find that out until I attempt to connect), this is happening week after week.

Scientists See Signs of Lasting Immunity to Covid-19, Even After Mild Infections A spot of hopeful news on COVID-19 and conferred immunity. Bodes well for an eventual vaccine. Until then, mask up and hunker down. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/16/health/coronavirus-immunity-antibodies.html?smtyp=cur

Is it safe to reopen schools during the pandemic? (from @AP) A sustained decline in cases and a positive case rate of less than 2% are among the signs the virus is under control, some experts say. Of course, DFW fails that basic test handily. https://apnews.com/9acd2a3f7af12421a4f39572afe5baac

Sometimes, “we are protecting your data from untrusted third parties” sounds better than “we want to hoover up all your data ourselves”.

@geniusmusing There could be some privacy reasons, but it could also be that non-Google camera apps tend to either be really simple and trouble-free or else they add features that the native camera app lacks.
