If I knew it would give her so much joy, I would have sent one years ago.

From http://status.hackerposse.com/url/24615 on Mastodon: Many months ago, I wrote about my experiences in cloning a system from a failing disk to a fresh disk. This process repeated itself this weekend. This time was a little different. Previously, the cloned disk used the old style “master boot record†(MBR) or “gnu partition table†(GPT) method of booting the d…

From Vicky_Bowskill@ecoevo.social on Mastodon: Finally worked out how to answer that perennial question that plagues every PhD pioneer… "So, how's your PhD going…?" It can be such a hard question to answer when your on this mammoth rollercoaster of a ride and often gets a shrug and "It's going...". For me it's looked a bit like this - but I'm nearly there! T-minus 6-m…

Womp womp. The gutting of the # twitterverse continues unabated. Joking aside, it breaks my heart to watch the tools I once used to manage my social network engagement wither and die as a corruption tears through the heart of the underlying theory and architecture. This is like watching a social virus spread and kill, choking and murdering the things that people worked fo…

NavierStokes is only good for bridging between non-ActivityPub federated systems and ActivityPub federated systems. All other social networks are no longer supported as they have closed their APIs. Sad state of affairs.

Migrating one of the server disks today. Routine maintenance. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/9927344aab6c2632114e731b2ddcff0c8253f62036131c4e5c497184f4f460e0/view

Yeah! But, Clonezilla is conservative ... and this disk had physical damage. Wound up having to clone the partitions by hand with ddrescue, but all went well and the system is back up!

It is a BEAUTIFUL morning in # Sudbury … perfect to finally grok the “freeze in†mechanism for establishing a relic density of cosmic dark matter! I am also very excited for @ jodi to return to Canada from Europe today. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/373036df6cf2a448cd0cd3b1f8cd8d1b0a9f0a755bbb52a2f862edde0ccaf252/view

I declare that tomorrow, Saturday, is a day for finally understanding # darkmatter “freeze in”, one of the mechanisms by which a population of dark matter can be left in the universe after the big bang despite the dark matter interacting with other forms of matter. Freeze in!

“ # StarWars : # Ashoka Episode 5 Is Getting a Limited Theatrical Release” WHUUUUUUUT!?!? I just learned about this from one of my nephews. We just finished an hour-long phone nerd-out over the first 4 episodes, and he dropped this little factoid on my plate. https://www. ign.com/articles/star-wars-ahs oka-episode-5-limited-theatrical-release I want to go to there. But will it be in # Sudbury ?!?!

I have no memory of meeting Dr. Hitchon during my time at UW-Madison (98-04), but it was a big department with many compartments in the faculty. This fact about part of his life is weird and fascinating. From http://status.hackerposse.com/url/24632 on Mastodon: Astronomers Observe Blobs of Dark Matter Down to a Scale of 30,000 Light-Years Across Although dark matter appears to dominate the mass of the Universe, astronomers still don't know what it is and haven't been able to study it in the lab. But its impact on the Universe can be mapped, thanks to gravitational lensing…

Good news: haven't tested positive for # COVID in the 72 hours since onset of respiratory illness symptoms. That's a relief. So this is just day 3 of a cold I probably caught on the plane back from # Vienna . I am having the full intercontinental travel experience I used to enjoy! 😃

From hfalcke@mastodon.social on Mastodon: Pocket book edition of “Light in the Darkness” arrived. The story of the 1st image of a black hole, that I witnessed first hand, but which already started when we first looked at the night sky and wondered about its secrets.
