@amic @kt And especially avoid almost any #VPS host advertised on LowEndBox unless you're just experimenting with throwaway code & data. When you pay $20-$50/year there's a lot you don't get, usually including reliability. -

A bit of sadness. I finally destroyed my original #VPS this morning, because I did not want to get billed for something I can't afford to pay for. Goodbye Horsewhip! You outlasted multiple generations of family and business servers, but it was your time to go. -

I should finish unpacking, then pre-pack for the (expected) next assignment in a colder place. But I should also get my home server rack set up finished, and do some more jobhunting (for jobs in #MO, near the grandkids).
And there's rented #VPS related work that also needs to get done.
Maybe instead of working, I'll just play #Galaga and #MegaMan all day today. -

#Consulta para @zagur o quien sepa de esto. Tengo que actualizar el software de base de mi #VPS pero me dicen que tengo un #CentOS 5 que no soporta las versiones más actuales de PHP o MySql. Así que tengo que actualizar primero a CentOS 6 o 7, pero en el nodo en el que estoy que es antiguo no se puede instalar el 7 y entonces me tendrían que mover a otro nodo en el que a lo mej… -

@taknamay You could also host your own (#GNU_Social, #PostActive, #Mastodon, #Friendica, ...) on a #VPS and decide many of the rules for yourself in exchange for site admin ( #DentMaster ) duties. Just informing you of another option to consider. -

I am !selfhost/ing at home on a cheap #nuc, costwise is competitive with #vps I think (overall power consumption of the server is ~10W and electricity is cheap here), no noise whatsoever. The only hassle was setting up the dynamic dns thing... -

... though most everything I do sits on servers (either #OpenVZ containers or #Xen / #KVM #VPS) that I rent and manage; so in that way, I already !selfhost. -
