I had a GS instance running, had a user account, remote joined !selfhost and then nuked that GS instance (without leaving the group). I re-created the GS instance and recreated my account (same name), but can't rejoin the group (Remote group join failed!). Looking at !selfhost it seems I'm still part of the group though. Is there anything I could do on my end to leave the group an…

So along with GNU social, I want to also run a WordPress blog. I got WP copied over and installed, but I can't seem to access any pages aside from the admin panel. Attempting to browse any other pages results in a "Nickname is identical to system path names." error from GNU social. Examples: http://status.hackerposse.com/url/7896 http://status.hackerposse.com/url/7897 The GNU soci…

I think I got my GNU social instance set-up properly, could anyone check out this setup guide to see if I might have missed/misconfigured anything? http://pastebin.com/gpxadR8r !selfhost

Alright, managed to get email sending figured out, partially. I used Gmail's SMTP server for testing, but couldn't figure out why my configuration didn't work. Turns out, there's a small setting at the bottom of Google's security page for allowing insecure apps to login, and it was off. Turning it on allowed for my GNU social server to send out emails. The second issue was that I …

Hmm, so I'm having a little trouble getting mail to work from GNU social. For now, I want to just use Gmail's SMTP server just to make sure I get the configuration down, and then eventually move it to my own server. I tried adding the necessary mail config values to config.php, but I don't seem to be receiving any mail. This is what I have in config.php: http://status.hackerposse.…

@aqeel yes. #Twister is the easiest thing I have ever self hosted. When compared with other stuff I "self-host" on other people's servers, this can be called the only thing I !selfhost - in the fullest meaning of the term :-) @erkanyilmaz

Alright, almost got my GNU social server up. Just got approved for StartSSL today (had to wait 3 days because of the new domain), got it installed on my server, and it passed a SSL checker site without problem, along with no certificate warning on Firefox. Only real thing I have to figure out now is the mailing system (for account activations). The email host I use now (Tutanota) …

I have lived on self-signed certs for a while, but recently got a domain name at #gandi, exactly because of some problems with mobile devices. You get a free single-domain cert for the first year (by that time I'll jump into the #LetsEncrypt boat). I struggled a bit with the dynamic ip setup and the certs but eventually got it working !selfhost

Working on getting my GNU social server set-up (along with a small guide). So far I think I have mostly everything working (emails don't seem to be sent). Just have to figure out how to get SELinux to play nicely with it, the email thing, and it should be good to go :) Is there any place that explains the different kind of GNU social sites (community, single user, etc)? Saw the op…

Sounds like you are going to have fun :) In my experience installing GNU social is fairly straightforward once you have a running webserver. Here is a plain install memo I use for myself https://git.gnu.io/aroque/gnu-social/wikis/GNUSocialInstall. And don't hesitate to ask !selfhost/ers if you run into troubles

@benfell Right now, with spending months on the road, !selfhost ing at home is not a viable option for me. But certainly, once I trade $EMPLOYER in for a better model, I'm looking to pull a lot of outside-hosted stuff back onto hardware that I physically control.

Welcome to !selfhost ing your own !gnusocial instance, @galoisghost@social.10one.net. I love it when the !fediverse gains a new instance. :-) !federati
