Heard about sloppy reporting in Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter saying that the latest #iOS updates remove the risk for getting the calls tapped... Well, maybe it removes one easy possibility of tapping it, but the imprecise description might get #iPhone people to think they are now safe. Come on... #security #privacy

After due consideration, I have decided to shut down the instance of !gnusocial at http://status.hackerposse.com/url/13704 . It's broken and it appears unlikely to be fixable. I'm not happy about this--it's my only means of contact with most of you. But this is broken. And when stuff fails to function properly, I wonder what it's doing other than what it should. Which is to say, i…

Using !Tor without #TorBrowser makes you vulnerable to DNS request leaks, and other nasties. I've seen this using #Thunderbird, which is just awful (ie. leaky) for all sorts of things (POP3, SMTP, IMAP, extensions). Not all data for every layer escapes, but there's enough leakage that anonymity is compromised. #TorBirdy is a Thunderbird plugin to reduce that kind of leakage. See h…

Reading the #Slashdot description it appears that encrypted data is not compromised, but, of course, with a root shell the entire drive could be wiped, LUKS partition and all. !crypto !security

@mk@oracle.skilledtests.com You're not "most people", you're !security-minded already. For most people, the extra effort of opening the password manager, copying username, switching back to the main app, pasting username, switching back to the password manager, copying password, switching back to the main app and pasting the password is a greater effort than typing "password123" f…

Auto-type encourages the use of strong passwords. With #KeepassX and other password managers you should be generating a different, random, and long (20+ chars) password for each thing that needs a password. Typing something like p)?S_YZ:~%G:BL is bad enough with a real keyboard; auto-type is even better on phones and tablets. You're less likely to choose a convenient but weak pass…
