Changed some images to show the new Zenity dialogs. https://freedombone.net/mesh_usage.html !Freedombone !Mesh

Adding kdenlive to the mesh desktop. I don't have PeerTube working yet, and that might not install, but at least if you're at an event then having the ability to make, edit and share videos or podthings via the IPFS Public folder without necessarily needing the internet could be useful. !Freedombone !mesh

I love using gnusocial.no but what happened to Schestowitz in Mastadon is making me think *REALLY HARD* on setting up my own !gnusocial instance -- despite me using it rarely. If people want to block me that's fine -- it's their prerogative. But when my instance does it w/o informing me at least -- it's very concerning. Looking at #freedombone

Just in case there are any new Mastodon instance admins out there reading this, the number one thing you need to have in place if you want any sustained presence on the open web is a backup system in place and tested. This was one of the things I found early on with the !Freedombone project. If you don't have backups, or only an untested system, then any database corrupti…

New !gnusocial screenshots on !Freedombone with the Pleroma UI https://freedombone.net/app_gnusocial.html

Adding this to the !Freedombone, !SelfHost, !Autonomous, !Decentralife groups. And heck, the !Fr33dom group too.

So after a lot of messing around, it worked. Using the current nightly build of prosody I can get all of the XEPs to be available within Conversations. #Freedombone
-
Looks like three fairly useful XEPs aren't being detected by Conversations. #Freedombone
-
Some of the XEP snafus were due to the new stricter permissions on #Freedombone, but there are still some expected ones which Conversations reports as unavailable.

@deavmi @kzimmermann2 on #Freedombone I have a combination of ngircd and znc. The IRC server isn't directly exposed to the internets, only the bouncer.

@louis Similar applies for schools. Why public organisations don't use more public software is an interesting question. I think partly it's ignorance, partly the heavy marketing of proprietary software companies versus almost no marketing for public software and just the simple inertia of "we've always used Windows". I have considered including GNU Health within #Freed…

@archaeme So it sounds like if I were to try adding Mastodon to #Freedombone then I'd need to add a swap file. 4GB sounds like a lot for a messaging app.

Improving security with STIG https://blog.freedombone.net/improving-security-with-stig #Freedombone

More tests on a Beaglebone Black to see if the security changes mess anything up, but it looks ok and all the tests pass. #Freedombone

Removed the app selection at the final part of the initial install. The original idea was that whatever apps were selected there would get the same password for simplicity, but I now think that's a bad idea and that installed apps should always get their own unique passwords. #Freedombone

I've checked this on #Freedombone and it looks like it's not a problem. Hashes for different onion addresses on the same server turn out different, as do the localhost ones. The nginx config must be good enough.
-
Zero security fails. Quite a few of the STIG tests were dumped because they're either not relevent or because the threat and expected usage model is different for a home server. There are now 90+ security tests run daily on the #Freedombone system, and an email warning should be produced if there are test failures.

Restricted user logins to 2 simultaneous ones. In the past sometimes I was logged in at work and had forgotten to log out on a machine at home. Also limited the maximum overall logins to ten. #Freedombone
-
@archaeme You can do that already. On #Freedombone if you install gnusocial you just get a single account, then you can remote follow others if you want to. You don't necessarily need to have multiple users on your server and can set to require admin authorisation for any new accounts.
