Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Thursday, 16-Jun-2016 15:01:35 EDT Bob Mottram @quanto If you want to start a campaign then I mentioned recently at the local hacklab that it would be good to try to convince many of the people who advocate free software but use sites such as Google+ to move over to using !gnusocial or #Hubzilla. Communications freedom also means having control of the web software infrastructure, and not just lazily relying upon Google or ot… -
Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Saturday, 11-Jun-2016 06:18:48 EDT Bob Mottram I tend to ignore anything blockchain-based, because as we can see with Bitcoin if it becomes popular then after a while it also becomes centralised, because only a few people can do block solving. When block solving is controlled by a small group, then all sorts of bad things can happen, such as false transactions, censored transactions and so on. So I think blockchains with pr… -
Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Monday, 06-Jun-2016 07:07:32 EDT Bob Mottram @dolus I think it would be a good strategy to focus promotion of !gnusocial towards the folks who are likely to be interested in decentralisation, liberty, censorship resistance, union organising, free software and so on. -
Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Tuesday, 31-May-2016 02:42:57 EDT Bob Mottram @maiyannah @armistace I think StatusNet was developed by one guy, who then started on the new shiny (pump.io) but for whatever reason then retired from development leaving pump in a half baked condition. Statusnet became !gnusocial, but who is now maintaining it and whether they are asleep at the wheel I don't know. If the maintainer is unresponsive to newly found security bugs then forking makes sense. -

Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Saturday, 28-May-2016 16:39:36 EDT Bob Mottram @maiyannah @moonman @takeshitakenji alternatively, if it's a generally useful patch for !gnusocial you could paste a git patch and I'll make a pull request of it. -

A place to have your groups censored
A place where you don't get to see important posts because of the algorithms

Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Wednesday, 25-May-2016 14:11:46 EDT Bob Mottram I notice there are three giant Facebook billboards up in Manchester. I didn't read them in detail, but it looks like the message is something like using their system to resist or "fight back". Probably they're still riding on the common association between Facebook and the Egyptian revolution.
If I had a big ladder I'd be tempted to replace the Facebook logo with a !gnusocial or #Hubzilla one. -
Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Monday, 23-May-2016 13:57:56 EDT Bob Mottram @hector I think it just uses an existing Markdown class, so it's not specifically a !gnusocial problem. -

Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Sunday, 22-May-2016 07:08:44 EDT Bob Mottram @strypey There isn't really a clear distinction between a server and desktop. I could install a web server and !gnusocial on mylaptop and run it that way. -
Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Saturday, 21-May-2016 06:05:16 EDT Bob Mottram @strypey This is the problem which #Hubzilla solved, or semi-solved, with "nomadic identity". So far as I know !gnusocial doesn't have this feature yet. -

Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Thursday, 19-May-2016 10:29:06 EDT Bob Mottram @manuel @takeshitakenji Both Qvitter and the #Sharings plugin are installed with !gnusocial by default on #Freedombone. I expect to be soon including the Sharings theme. -
Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Thursday, 19-May-2016 10:26:35 EDT Bob Mottram @manuel @takeshitakenji See http://freedombone.uk.to/installation.html for building images. Freedombone has a number of variants, and if you specify the social variant (build option -v social) you'll get !gnusocial and #hubzilla. -
Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Thursday, 19-May-2016 10:18:02 EDT Bob Mottram @manuel @takeshitakenji another way to deploy !gnusocial is using #Freedombone on low cost single board computers, like the Beaglebone Black. -
Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Wednesday, 18-May-2016 06:55:22 EDT Bob Mottram @drymer @zoowar @moshpirit @echosa @thomask I regard !gnusocial as being purely for public communications. If you want privacy use #Hubzilla -
Bob Mottram (bob)'s status on Wednesday, 18-May-2016 05:08:19 EDT Bob Mottram @maiyannah @manuel in that case no. I use a particular commit of !gnusocial, otherwise it fails to display within OrFox. I reported that problem a while ago, and it might be a bug in OrFox. Until there's a new OrFox version resolving the issue I'll stick with the current commit.
