Made it as far as Escanaba, MI today, and having a lovely time. https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/56830062b12e687fce6983de4e3b62e51fe3bf5c8b6820f174136f94250941f8/view

From http://status.hackerposse.com/url/24447 on Mastodon: # CMSPaper 1216: The η (=eta) is a special particle.This paper finds a new way the η can decay: into four muons. This is important because it measures muon-photon interactions, and quite accurately at that. That is a precision test of theory predictions, including some inputs to the muonic magnetic dipole moment.…

I was today years old when I helped to estimate the height of a leak in a cylindrical tank using measurements of fill height and leak rate. I was inspired to try this by my Honors Physics students from SMU, who, over many years, tried to estimate interesting things from limited data.

Looking forward to a few days of vacation with family in Wisconsin!

Here is a wide-angle shot looking down into the water shiield after concluding the fill today. The tank is about 110 inches in diameter and the water is 90 inches deep. I think this is just a thing of beauty, like dark matter detector meets warp core. The vessel in the center is the pressure vessel, which holds mineral oil. Inside the mineral oil is a set of jars filled w…

Had an absolutely excellent time again today in the underground laboratory at SNOLAB. Worked with the PICO team to put another ~6000 liters of water in the shield tank. Ran a little experiment over at HALO involving Newton’s Laws and Maxwell’s Equations. Scoped out some oxygen sensors for a summer research project. Oh, and had a great time streaming a sample loaded in…

Yesterday was a busy day! In addition to management activities, it was great to begin welcoming summer research students to # SNOLAB and to begin data quality “shifting†for # HALO . Also kept thinking (and calculating) about evaporation and other ways of losing water from the # PICO shield tank as we plan to continue filling the water shield.

@lnxw48a1
I have my own workaround for just this issue.
I raise my hand to the "Stop/Hold" position.
Get to a point where I can stop and leave myself a note on the next thing to do.
Then let them interrupt me.
I have even done this to my former boss and the owner. It wasn't long before they adopted it for the same reason.
YMMV

Also spent part of the weekend thinking a little about evaporation of water from the PICO shield tank. It was a very satisfying dive, even if I don’t trust the conclusions too much. That said, I am slightly more comfortable with the mathematics of evaporation rates than I was 24 hours ago.

What a lovely weekend. The weather was really nice on Saturday, so we could break in the patio with a cookout and some guest company! Today it rained, but it was cool and clear this evening and sunset was peaceful. I really needed this.
