@guizzy I'm not the best person to answer this, seeing that I don't like those kind of sites in general. But with that caveat, I keep hearing two things about the existing sites: (1) their communities seem to be full of negativity and anger (and whatever social / political point of view someone dislikes) (2) their moderation seems to lack transparency and to tilt in one directi…

There are a lot of government internal and external sites (probably others, but I’m more familiar with gov’t) using old plugins that will stop working at the end of this year or early next year. I suppose some orgs will have an archive of $BROWSER $VERSION + $PLUGIN installers that might delay the required rebuilding of sites, at least internally. But really, isn’t there …

@guizzy @medli ... they should use those cattle prods on their managers also. Back when I was working in a fast food place and taking college courses, corporate sent out a notice that henceforth, we would not be accepting bills of larger value than USD$20. They even sent signs that we had to put up around the restaurant. A customer comes in, orders $3 worth of food (it was …

this #linux (kernel) security fix talk is a big yikes. Speaker said it is going to go up on YouTube.
That said, it only applies if you are pulling your kernels from kernel.org
-
@musicman I did the download and compile a kernel thing twenty years ago, but now I just use whatever the distro’s default kernel is. No more “oops, I forgot to compile the module for the network driver”.

some of the talk was stuff that matters for distros too. Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_Kza6fdkSU

By the way, @tobias, I think your #Textile plugin for #StatusNet was the basis for @chimo's #Markdown plugin for #GNUsocial.

In change of position, President #Trump now says he would wear a mask to protect against the spread of #COVID-19
“If I were in a tight situation with people I would, absolutely.”
A fellow Republican had recently lamented the way mask-wearing has been politicized.

I've joined the Fediverse August 2008 as @Tobias Diekershoff, after a report in one of Germans IT-News portals. I never was on Twitter before, but had a, more or less dormant, Facebook account. Microblogging was fun, in contrast to organizing study groups at FB ;-) and when Laconica (the software that ran http://status.hackerposse.com/url/155…

Spent a very frustrating few hours with #GNUSocial 2.x. Major undocumented changes. You have to look at git commit messages for clues. There's maybe three people working on it and all discussion appears to be via email (or maybe they share a flat). I got as far as the white screen of death (#PHP syntax errors). Next step may be #Mastodon, which means #Ruby! A message to you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cntvEDbagAw

@andyc Resource heavy is fine. I'm after maintenance light. I'm still carrying one #Linode VPS as part of my #ITPTSD, and despite having to collect all the email from hot girls who finally see a real man and want to meet today, it is definitely not over-taxed.

Why did this never occur to me as objectionable nomenclature? I'll never look at an IDE cable the same way again. https://boingboing.net/2020/06/29/for-triggers-gates-clocks-a.html Mind you, my chances of seeing an IDE cable at all are rather slim. I'm _fairly_ sure I threw my last one out.

Just deleted a lot of a/c from a shared server..
The domain the server sits on was registered 16 years ago (2004-06-19), only removed the a/c because it's not really relevant to most of them any longer.
It's made me feel strange. Watching the names of people go past.. Some were friends. all were friends of friends. Some I fell out with. Some are dead.

I’m going to have to look for a copy of this. Sunset Western Garden book. https://www.amazon.com/New-Western-Garden-Book-Gardening/dp/0376039205/
In the older version, they had climate zones that are more precise and better than the USDA’s climate zones.
-
@geniusmusing I got the older version (1980s?) from a thrift store about 10-15 years ago. I don’t know if Sunset (“the magazine of Western living”) is still publishing, but they used to have some pretty great articles.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachinidae I think this is the fly that I saw yesterday.
I’m going to make “annoying buzzing of flies” one of the signs I watch when I’m tending to my garden.
I intensely dislike flies, but I’ll try to leave these caterpillar ???? killers alone.

I've been using #Manyverse ( #SSB software client ) on #iOS and #Android a little over the past couple of months. The only way to 'meet' people and make contacts is to join a pub. Copying a 'pub' invite and pasting it into the client is not easy. It took several tries on the Apple iPad, and was only possible by learning to trick the text selection function. On Android, there ar…

I'm not very conversational there. I pretty much just read others' posts. I rarely respond or post.
#SSB seems to be a "refrigerator magnet" type of place.
Let me explain that term. When #GD2 sends me some of her artwork, I stick one piece up on the fridge (using a magnet). That's "Look at what [my granddaughter] drew / colored / painted for me". So "refrigerator magnet" is hey, look at what I did.
