   I consider myself reasonably competent, but I just find the setup and operation of !emacs gnus to be incomprehensible

     was working my way through the pertinent sections. But even with that and googling, I can't get gnus to open a maildir

     You don't actually *want* !gnus to touch your #Maildir directly—you want it to go through a lightweight local #IMAP server. Really.

     decided to go with just using the available imap, worked fine. :-)
