   School food was really awful. X decades later, I'm still impressed by just how bad school food tasted.
   
   I often gave most of my lunch away.

     @geniusmusing Oh, yeah. Ours was pretty awful. Flavor was like they poured canned tomato sauce (without any added spices) on a thick slab of undercooked dough, then sprinkled generic grated cheese on top. Made in giant square pans.      That was my third high school. My first and second high schools didn't have cafeterias, so I mostly went without eating. (Family had more kids than money.)
     
     The object in that 3rd school became "ingest just enough to stave off starvation".
