   @archaeme Don't get me wrong, SSDs are going to have a shorter shelf life than mechanical HDDs, but either are going to get outmoded before they get at the end of their write life.

    The redis queue isn't perfect and exacerbates federation issues, so there's costs and benefits with it.  But being able to page out to disk means you can run it on very very little memory

    Given that Mastodon.social came to a screeching halt the moment it got any traffic at all, I wouldn't recommend it for a resource-deprived environment.  Along with my biased recommendation of postActiv (redis queue can be made to page to the disk after all, so it can run on very small amounts of memory), Hubzilla is also pretty decent in that regard.

    If you produce content that can at all be considered controversial, or expresses strong opinions, expect that sooner or later, you are going to have some sort of problem of this nature because of them, especially in this climate where it pays people to be upset and outraged at you.

    Always have a backup plan.  Don't wait for someone to screw you before you start worrying about that.

    Personally I just use patreon at request.  Most of my money comes through Paypal.  And even Paypal I can't say I'd recommend strictly speaking, any more than I'd recommend a bank - its more that it's so ubiquitous that its what everyone uses so you kind of have to have it if you're doing business.

    Really, if you have a bitcoin or a paypal, you should be using those.  If you're in a country with providers that can directly deposit to a bank account, all the better.

    While that kind of pushback does Patreon not many favours, I don't think I've yet seen a Patreon that's been sanctioned that didn't do something to deserve it.
    
    Read the TOS.  Abide by them.  
    
    But just as importantly, don't trust anyone but yourself to handle money.
