@moonman @sim In my project management experience (and I had to run a team of just short of 100 people once at IBM), this results in better productivity anyways, because you allow people to play to their interests and passions, which results in them being more motivated and invested in the code they're writing, which almost always results in better code faster, if people are disciplined about it. -

@moonman @sim Same goes for Moon when he contributes, or Verius, or Takeshitakenji, etc etc -

@moonman @sim Put in another way: people are free to suggest whatever they like for postActiv and I value that feedback greatly - its hard to get people to even give feedback sometimes - but I'm ultimately the one that determines what I program, when, and how much time I spend on it. -

@sim @moonman There's a moderate position to be found here. Listening to others is important because their perspectives may lead you to good ideas you didn't have before (a lot of postActiv's changes are because of feedback!) The important thing though is YOU should be running the show, not them. Whether that you is a team of developers that are the software tea… -

@sim @moonman I will make it transparent on the server side, as much as possible, but I do not think I will make the social graph transparent as to individual user choices, as per @verius' concern about this being used to network block bots (and it could also subject people to harassment over blocks, mutes, etc) -

@sim @moonman Everyone helps in their own way, and yours seems to be functioning as a fairly reasonable mind with things get, well, less than reasonable. As much as it has subjected you to a lot of stuff you probably should not have had to deal with. -

I am firmly of the belief that most of the tension in the fediverse that flares up would be adaquetely mitigated by giving users fine control over what they do and don't want to see. The rest will hopefully sort itself out as social groups adapt, some people listen to each other, and you know you don't have to put up with anything you don't want to.
The wall around Mastodon will probably help too. -

@moonman @sim The rendering engine rewrite is the primary prerequisite to this, because there is just /no way/ you are doing this in the existing GS rendering engine without HUGE performance hits, but Smarty can do this quick and easily as long as enough information is exposed to it. -

@moonman @sim This is actually the genesis of postActiv - this idea. It wasn't something Mikael was keen on writing himself, so I forked GNU social to work on the codebase myself. And then all the other ideas I've had have also happened and I've been picking away piece by piece at progress as I can. -

@sim @moonman Oh for certain. If I was making something I didn't want to use myself, I wouldn't be able to ensure it's of the best quality I can muster. I think a lot of programmers get locked into paths where they end up loathing the software they themselves are writing because they change it from their own vision to appeal to others. -

@sim @moonman I actually plan this to be something you can do both user level (so if you don't like Mastodon for instance, you could just disallow that instance as a user), and on the server level (so I could disallow images or links from smuglo.li as an example, to be able to open up federation without having to worry about legal reprecussions) -

@sim @moonman (Though I feel compelled to note how many people are happy to give a hack at 'fixing it themselves' when they feel their contributions are valued) -

@sim @moonman I do actually plan to add a method to allow or disallow attachments, based upon user, group a user belongs to, hashtag, or instance of origin, I just haven't gotten that far yet. I have a long list of things I want to do with postActiv (some of which is here: https://git.postactiv.com/postActiv/postActiv/issues )
