@admin I tried just the other day, using libraries for OAuth 1.0a. I used an anonymous client (like MustardMod does) and 'oob' as callback. Worked fine to get the access token etc.
Haven't tried registering it as an app in the Settings menu yet though. -

I noticed that (of course) I had issues running the upgrade script if I did it with a user different from the one running !GNUsocial. But a proper upgrade won't be running as the wrong user anyway... :) -

The upgrade.php script will probably take a while to run with all the moving. Could take a bit shorter if you do the clean_thumbnails.php thing first.
