I'm slowly migrating away from #Pidgin towards !Gajim as my preferred !XMPP client. But Pidgin was my #IRC client too - anyone have suggestions? I've used #XChat, and found it impossible.

Okay, so #Matrix: positives are that the #Riot client has a beauteous interface; http://status.hackerposse.com/url/13727's bridge to #Freenode offers ever-growing scrollback in #IRC rooms; possible to !selfhost a matrix server. Minuses: I haven't yet found a http://status.hackerposse.com/url/13728 bridge to #XMPP (which would greatly enhance its value to me); no concept of indi…

And I just want to add this to the !Conversations and !Gajim groups. ♻ @vinz: #HowTo: End-to-End Encrypted group chats via XMPP https://current.workingdirectory.net/posts/2017/encrypted-mucs/ !xmpp

Feel free to connect with my !XMPP account xmpp:bjonkman@sobac.com if you want to try an #OMEMO conversation...

I'm trying out the !Conversations !XMPP client; is anyone else using #OMEMO encryption? !conversations

Try the !GNUsocial !XMPP chat room at gnusocial@conference.bka.li which is bridged to the IRC room #social

@bthall Do you have an #XMPP account? For example: Accounts on jabber dot org, sure dot im, dukgo dot com can talk to me (lnxw48 @ im . federati . net OR lnxw37 @ im . opensourceplayground . org).

@nanoha I don't leave my social network (!GNUsocial) to communicate privately with people I have gotten to know here. Nor do I find it troublesome to use another piece of software (some !XMPP client) in parallell that is awesome and streamlined for private communication.
In fact, this distinction is great for usability and understandability. Also for privacy, security and organisation of communication.

@gargron My suggestion is that we distinguish this social network as public (just as blogs are public). Privacy should be achieved via networks and technologies designed for it - such as !xmpp.
The !OStatus technologies are all based on the open, linkable web. Trust is only possible on ::1

@schlink Some degree of coordination and cooperation is needed, of course. But look at the way !XMPP network all moved to requiring #TLS for server-to-server connections. It was a priority, so most everyone made the move, leaving laggards (including Google Talk) behind.

@aqeel As I understand it, @bob is trying to get Synapse (the primary #Matrix homeserver project) working, including bridging to #XMPP. Not quite the same as using the Riot client with a matrix\.org account.

@moonman The author(s) of #Conversations were the ones who appropriated (I love that word) the #Signal encryption stuff (axolotl which became "the Signal protocol" or whatever?) onto !XMPP using the pubsub XEP for public keys. So no wonder their own client supports it .)
Gajim's plugin draft was written by Conversations developers too, so that was awesomely nice by them. I'm happy I have donated hard cash.

@grmpyoldman multi-hop bridging could become messy. With the #XMPP - #IRC bridges I've seen, every MUC to room connection requires someone has to set up a separate #bot. #Matrix seems to do many to many without individual room bots. (Improving MUC to room interface would be a great GSOC project; maybe resulting product could be a major XEP.)

@jim Modern #PHP requires "browser-valid" certs. If the #GS instance's chosen #XMPP server uses self-signed, errors stop xmpp and queue daemons.

I'm using #spectrum2 to bridge #IRC / #XMPP now; it's better than the #ejabberd module, but still has some problems; I don't think it's expecting to actually be used for IRC....
