    @schlink Some degree of coordination and cooperation is needed, of course. But look at the way !XMPP network all moved to requiring #TLS for server-to-server connections. It was a priority, so most everyone made the move, leaving laggards (including Google Talk) behind.

      @schlink However, if only federating with small number of other providers (as OWS did), fear of breaking connection with slow-moving providers becomes an issue. Solution is to have large number of providers, with users dispersed among them.

      @gargron @schlink Of course you have to have an agreed-upon core and you wouldn't make breaking changes just for the heck of it, but layering non-breaking features on top shouldn't be a major issue.
