!selfhost/ers will love it

Sometimes, !selfhost isn't so fun. I had to get the cable modem replaced yesterday. I have to give #Comcast Business credit: They were out within a couple hours, which is a lot faster than I expect from anybody in this space. Unfortunately, it turns out that a couple of my DNS secondaries had broken. Unfortunately, it turns out that these cable modems ship with some default sett…

Is anyone lamenting the death of Yahoo Pipes? Is anyone in the !Fediverse affected by it? It's killed our local Tech Events calendar, @Watcamp http://watcamp.com/ As always, !SelfHosting FTW! http://pipes.yqlblog.net/post/120705592639/pipes-end-of-life-announcement

!selfhost question: how do you configure your DNS to allow accessing different ports?

@deavmi sounds awesome! I'm chronicling something similar on my adventures with #netbookserver and !selfhost ing

@deavmi yes! A !selfhost ed one too. I wanna make it so that my netbook hosts #searx, #gs, #zeronet, #i2p and email. A true gateway!

@chimo on the queue together with my other !selfhost quests but first I need a domain. FreeDNS locked my account. Where can I get one?
-
@cmhobbs yeah, well I mostly !selfhost as a sysadmin study too. I don't feel experienced enough to run them production-grade yet...
-
@cmhobbs funny, I have the 900 series and it worked wonders for me as a miniserver. I !selfhost ed quite a few services and it was alright

I !selfhost e-mail now, but have been on the upgrade path for years. I have some bookmarks: 1) http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/04/taking-e-mail-back-part-4-the-finale-with-webmail-everything-after/ 2) http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/02/how-to-run-your-own-e-mail-server-with-your-own-domain-part-1/2/ 3) http://www.horde.org/ 4) http://iredmail.org/ That should keep you busy...

Even after putting some rest to my netbook, I'm still into the !selfhost business. Next on my list is #email. Anybody knows a good guide?

Enabled queuedaemon.php on my !selfhost !gnustatus now. Hopefully nothing breaks.

This is the risk of #decentralization but not !selfhost (ing). You're just as reliant on someone else, but with less stability.
I think Charles Roth deserves some credit here: When he felt he could no longer host his sites, he gave lots of notice up front. But even so, some folks were relying on him for some stuff.

@lohang Saw his post a couple hours back and identi.ca isn't even responding now. Too bad. Even with RedMatrix and such many run to twitter

@ericxdu23 if Evan's sites were the only major instances #pumpverse had then it's #epicfail V2. Same happened when everyone was depending on #identica without bothering to !selfhost
