Mistpark is a distributed social network with a "Facebook-like" interface (as opposed to a "Twitter-like" interface). It offers heaps of features, security and simple (yet thorough) privacy controls, and runs on commodity hosting platforms (PHP/MySQL/Apache). Mistpark is free and open source, released under the BSD license.
