unsurprisingly, #maven version so old in CentOS that it is unusable. maven now compiled from source, and doing its own compilation.

maybe I just haven't run into any issues with #maven, but why someone would pick #gradle instead is beyond me

Anybody got a test application that uses the #JDBC? This doesn't seem like it should be hard to find. I just need a jar, though if the source is ready for #maven, I can just use that too.
