@musicman I don't know how much you have planned for June, but large jumps in distance are probably not a good idea. Better if you can make your June distance somewhere intermediate between your May and July distances. -

the answer is...it depends on the version, but basically either way you should be using log4j if you don't use logrotate. -

in the past, rotation was not possible with logging.properties by default. log4j (or something like it) was required.
I do not know 100% if this is still the case. -

log4j can be used with Tomcat. It's not a satisfactory answer (for me, yet...might fall back on it)
