I'd expect it to be much easier to train people not to think for themselves than to suppress intelligence by influencing gene expression.

Yes, but that's where you're misunderstanding me. It's the same exact thing. This 'training' propagates downwards generation after generation because epigenitics. It's already been proven that exercise affects gene expression related to metabolism, fat burning, muscle development, etc. It's probably the same for intelligence/critical thinking; tendencies pronounce themselves over time.
