     Talked her through logging in. Discovered that they had not been given access to the data they need for the project yet.

     I think the second one is preferrable. Assuming that the college’s tech staff actually gets control over the server, of course. But it is probably not a good idea to let 3PV have control anyway, so 3PV.com is not an option one should expect.
