     @aral Depends on your perspective on cooperation. I'd like to phrase it like this:
     
     On _our_ instance, _we_ are the collective. _Together_ we create a _community_.
     
     It does not have to be someone else's just because it isn't yours. It might as well be a cooperative where people work together. Machines are binary, people are human.

     @aral But yes, it all boils down having individual sovereignty or not. I believe it should be possible, but not encouraged above all else (as your statement "we must encourage instances of one whenever possible" suggests).

     @shnoulle Agreed, one may want to keep data if an instance or domain name is known to be lost or shut down.
     
     (but at least archiving the data is very simple as you can just import it to a feed reader via Atom, which has 'next' links so you can easily traverse an account's entire feed).
