Honestly these days, if an album isn't on Bandcamp or another means of DRM free music I don't care to buy it.
I refuse to buy music from Google or iTunes.
I don't care how good it is.
-
After losing almost five thousand dollars worth of music when I lost control of my iTunes account a couple months ago, I will never buy music with DRM again. I told myself time and time again it was okay because it was really GOOD music it doesn't matter. But it did, because I can't access it anymore.
-
These days if I like the music but they don't have DRM free music, I don't feel so bad about procuring bootlegs.
-
Moreover, the impression I get about many bands big and small is once theyre in these corporate silos they no longer care about reaching the audience that exists outside them - in some cases, even if that's their main audience. And if the band says 'fuck you' to me, I don't really care not to respond in kind, especially in Canada where downloading music is entirely…

@nope itch.io is games focused but I've seen music on there. It doesn't enforce non-DRM stances however. Bandcamp is the one I use all the time because it's definitely the big daddy of DRM-free music.
-
@kevie @nope Amazon doesn't enforce non-DRM stances either, but like itch.io it's kind of the status quo. There is some DRMed music there, but most of it isn't because it breaks the status quo and makes the product seem inferior to someone else's.

@kevie @nope Unfortunately, digital music downloads are largely not available via Amazon Canada for completely stupid reason (shit's digital so I don't know why there'd be that regionalization besides "haha fuck you")
-
@kevie @nope Can't say I've bought from them before, but there's one I'll keep in mind for the future.
-
@kevie @nope Honestly you'll be transcoding it to m4a or mp3 to play it on mobile devices anyways. The only positive I personally find to seeing flac downloads is if its flac you know you have an un-DRMd source at least.
-
@kevie @nope Well the nice thing about bandcamp is it usually has music in every file format under the sun.

@mangeurdenuage They won't recover an account to which you've lost your password for you unless you still have the Apple device that is attached to it
-
@nerthos "apple" the software company name should be a bad word.

@mangeurdenuage The sad thing in this regard, is in many ways it was Jobs that kept the worse instincts of Apple in check. Look at how they instantly embraced a ton of shit stuff like killing the headphone jack and adding NSA backdoors the moment he was gone.
