Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Wednesday, 18-Sep-2019 00:45:41 EDT Matthew Davidson I've been dying for a full day off #work for ages. Two o'clock in the afternoon, and I'm bored now. -
Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Tuesday, 17-Sep-2019 19:48:41 EDT Matthew Davidson Wow. Gobsmacked. This feels like Al Franken's decision, but worse: i.e. probably the right thing to do personally, but with a massive downside. https://www.fsf.org/news/richard-m-stallman-resigns #FSF #RMS -
Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Sunday, 15-Sep-2019 20:20:36 EDT Matthew Davidson #Listening to a live performance of BBC Sound Effects Vol. 7: Sounds of Suburbia, track 19, Dueling Bench Saws. With a neighbour either side, the stereo separation is remarkable. -
Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Sunday, 15-Sep-2019 04:53:02 EDT Matthew Davidson @tregeagle I tried the 'Pedometer' that was GPLv3-or-later. Based on a 3½ hour shift this afternoon + ~20 min commute each way, it reports 8352 steps and 6.27km. This is based on a 75cm stride length which I rounded down to a nice fraction of a meter from the average for a chap my height (80-something, according to the Internet). But of course that all assumes recreational, … -
Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Saturday, 14-Sep-2019 07:51:15 EDT Matthew Davidson 8 hours at #work today. Shattered. Really must get a pedometer app or something to measure the number of steps I take per hour. Can't begin to imagine a way to measure the number of kilograms I lift/push. -
Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Friday, 13-Sep-2019 19:21:39 EDT Matthew Davidson Cherry red sunrise and a blanket of smoke haze over #Sawtell this morning. -

Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Sep-2019 21:34:50 EDT Matthew Davidson @tregeagle Blimey. Pick your poison. Ta. It's non-Hodgkin I'm interested in. -
Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 23:32:15 EDT Matthew Davidson Ha. John Bolton is out. Couldn't happen to a nicer raving nutcase. Can't understand why #Trump occasionally appoints people with an agenda (albeit an unspeakably vile one) when all he really wants is utterly unprincipled craven subservience. Lasted longer than Bannon though. If civilisation survives, this presidency is going to make such a brilliant HBO box set. https://edition.cnn.com/2019/09/10/politics/trump-john-bolton-out/index.html #US -

Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 06:01:33 EDT Matthew Davidson 'Bag-in-a-box packaging was used in America in 1955 to transport battery acid. Australian wine-makers were the first to grasp its potential as a wine container.' Makes ya proud. [Slurp] Hmm… Battery acid. Yes, I'm getting notes of that. And a refreshingly abrasive mouthfeel, followed by an invigorating involuntary shudder, and a finish which puts me in mind of that charming… -
Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 03:45:56 EDT Matthew Davidson CryptoPonzi changes the risk calculus for a hobby sysadmin. If an attacker's objective is to quietly leech CPU cycles, what better target than a GNU/Linux VPS whose typical virtual CPU usage rounds down to 0% of its allotment? Think I may have to start running `apt-get dist-upgrade` non-interactively via cron. -
Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Tuesday, 10-Sep-2019 03:16:44 EDT Matthew Davidson Well, that was painful. After playing whack-a-mole with all the redundant processes, executables, /etc/cron* entries, etc., a bash script to stomp on the lot and immediately reboot for good measure saw off the script kiddies in time for #work today. -
Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Monday, 09-Sep-2019 17:25:19 EDT Matthew Davidson Well that explains why my processes were dying. #Exim vulnerability let a cryptocurrency miner in. Would never have noticed if the script wasn't over-zealous in identifying process that may be a threat. Start killing #MySQL and #Apache and people will notice. Going through my system deleting the garbage now. Feel like I can hear HAL singing "Daisy, Daisy…" https://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/us/threat-encyclopedia/malware/trojan.sh.mixbash.a -

Matthew Davidson (mjd)'s status on Sunday, 01-Sep-2019 06:50:25 EDT Matthew Davidson Been hors de combat for much of the week due to the minor ailments I gather round to shield me from any major ones, but just had six hours of lovely Sunday pay rate to make up for it. Walking home after dark I had an enormous bat (flying fox) wheeling round me, with a wingspan which seemed comparable to that of a pelican. They're chattering away all round my flat right now. T…
