"The spice must flow" As I wrote several days ago, Zoom has become highly unstable on my desktop computer. Iâ**ve tried everything, including switching from the KDE desktop environment to the XFWM one; switching off compositing; using all different versions of the NVIDIA drivers; swapping other NVIDIA cards into the system; different kinds of LINUX kernels. Nothing helps… -

.@kubasto I saw that Einstein video you retweeted (https://t.co/ek9SGXrnX7). "This means something" Awoke a few days ago to find a line of cat toys stretching from the master bedroom into the foyer of the house. The cats have started communicating by toy. "No time to quit" Until there is a vaccine, or enough testing and tracking capability to ensure new cases are spotted quickly and isolated, this is no time for Collin County to quit its effective social distancing protocols. The doubling time for COVID-19 cases now is 25 days; before social distancing went into effect, it was 2 days. You â*¦ Continue reading "No time to… -

Tomorrow... using only the basics of the Schroedinger Wave Equation and a synthesis of Physics I and II content... Modern Physics students will calculate the half-life of Radon. SARS-CoV-2 is sometimes referred to as "the invisible enemy" - but human have known well how to reveal such small enemies for decades: quantum mechanics. The scanning electron microscope uses the wave nature of matter to make images of near-atomic-scale phenomena. "Fall down, go Vroom" Like many institutions, Iâ**m using a video conferencing client whose name rhymes with â**Vroomâ** in order to conduct classes. Things were going great for the first 2 weeks. Last Friday, things took a serious turn. It all started with a long-standing problem on my home desktop machine. I run Ubuntu Linux 18.04 on a hand-built computer. â*¦ Cont… -

"The Muon: 1970" In 1970, Hall, Lind, and Ristenen (Univ. of Colorado at Boulder) published a paper in the American Journal of Physics (AJP, vol. 38, No. 10) on â**A Simplified Muon Lifetime Experiment for the Instructional Laboratory.â** Basically, it articulates precisely the experiment at the heart of a similar instrument at SMU. I've now looked ta 695h of muon decay data, same as the length of a data run used in an inspiring paper (Hall, R.E. et al. AJP, Vol 38, No. 10, 1970). I find the lifetime to be 2170 +/- 29 ns; Hall found 2106 +/- 58 ns. Not bad! From 1970 to now, same muon lifetime. :-) https://twitter.com/drsekula/status/1249453015171584004/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/64544 -
