From PhysicsToday https://twitter.com/PhysicsToday on Twitter: Astronomer Vera Rubin, whose measurements of galactic rotation curves confirmed the existence of dark matter, was born #OTD 1928. In 2006 she wrote in Physics Today about how that pivotal work came to be http://physicstoday.scitation.org/doi/10.1063/1.2435662 -

This is an interesting trend, and reminds us why case counts alone cannot be blindly used. Similarly, my county's case counts have leveled - maybe decline a little. But so has testing. Positivity rate is FLAT, though, at 11-12%. That rate is more useful. https://twitter.com/COVID19Tracking/status/1286433073781813248 -

Wisely put on hold due to the pandemic, I nonetheless am saddened we could not teach at the Taos Cultural Institute. Here are some of my reflections on last year's course on the history and legacy of the Manhattan Project. https://steve.cooleysekula.net/blog/2019/07/23/a-peek-into-the-secret-city/ https://twitter.com/drsekula/status/1285707431616679937/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/66454 -

From chronicle https://twitter.com/chronicle on Twitter: In late May, about two-thirds of plans collected by The Chronicle said they were planning for in-person classes. But that figure has slowly declined; by Monday afternoon, it was just above 50 percent. https://www.chronicle.com/article/Colleges-Hoped-for-an/249206?key=uy7jbj-OudpROsyljNAvPzhaa2UY-AZiBZI8wvMVS8-TO7DXInTJBoeruQA3xVeJa3BfNnNpbWhZbFp6bnRqMnJ1aWdMQlFCTlFmZ1RmT2NkbEV1bUsxb185Yw -

I just figured out today that Grant Sanderson (3blue1brown) used Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) to do his "Lockdown Math" series and... ... I am not going to lie ... ... I giggled a little excitedly. (I realized OBS's icon and an icon in his task switcher are the same) -

My contribution to amateur observations of Comet Neowise. @profcooley and I went out last night to a town park. City lights make the comet unseeable with the unaided eye. With binoculars, or a ~few second camera exposure, it's readily seen! But city lights are a real killer. https://twitter.com/drsekula/status/1284982071648309249/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/66436 -

From COVID19Tracking https://twitter.com/COVID19Tracking on Twitter: Our hospitalization data became very solid with the inclusion of Floridas numbers on July 10. Then came the new HHS guidelines. Since then, some individual states' numbers have become more erratic. See, for example, Alabama today. https://twitter.com/COVID19Tracking/status/1284967553056436225/photo/1 https://chirp.cooleysekula.net/attachment/66434 -
