   at the moment, it doesn't appear to be doing much routing. It looks like a developer thing right now. That seems like a reasonable strategy going forward though.

    if people are unwilling to take security seriously with all of the benefits to being secure, I highly doubt the general public is going to care about federation. It's a fantastic technical feature, but not one most will think or care about.

    this is why I think for some time not having registrations makes sense. You force federation until you reach some sort of critical mass. I don't know what that critical mass is and maybe once you reach that the idea of canonical no longer matters.

    I can understand not wanting new registrations before The Big Pump and perhaps immediately after, and I understand the push to federate, but for people coming from a non-federation world, I think they will want a canonical instance.
